PSU 460 question

1st...if your friend is planning the build as a gaming system, then tell him don't bother with the X6, as it perform no better than the X4 as games simply don't take advantage of the two extra cores.

2nd...the Antec Earthwatts 500W would be perfectly fine (I assume it is a PSU he already got, not "going to" buy). It might be a be dated, but it is one of the better quality PSU back then. In fact for the system you mentioned, even decent 450W PSU would be more than suffice.

PSU will be fine.

In response ot the 6 vs 4 cores argument the change is happening a lot faster than the transition form 1 to 2 according to PCgameshardware for not a lot more and turboboost (or what ever its called) it does not seem like such a bad idea.

Yea...? But one thing you are forgetting is the price. For the price of a build for Phenom II X6, people can put a i5 760 build together, which will have the edge in frame rate that's not limited to specific games that "might" benefit from two extra cores on a slower architecture.

So you're saying don't buy the hex core PII; buy an i5.

Just out of interest how does a hexcore perform against a 760 in games that support more than four cores?
