Hi all
Is it neccesary to use the 4 pin 12v molex connector that plugs into the motherboard? The main 20 pin motherboard connector is plugged in but the 4pin one wont reach to the socket (it spurs off the main 20 pin connector) will it run ok without it plugged in ? Its only a budget build running an amd sempron AM2 3000 cpu, geforce 7300gt,1gb ram, samsung dvd writer and a 160gb hard drive.

thx

I can only renemeber some very old mobo's wich didnt need it, try it i suppose, if it wont boot then you know you cant, if it boots then leave the 4 pin cable...

Hmm, a 4 pin molex is the same as what hard/CD/DVD drives use, I'm assuming you mean the 4 pin +12v power block (usually known as "P4")?

If so you really should plug that in, many machines won't boot properly without it.

Another thing I find confusing in your post is you say it spurs off the main 20 pin connector, many ATX 2.x PSUs have a detachable section on the main 24 pin ATX connector but that detachable 4 pin block (to make it into 20 pin connector) is not the same as the 4 pin +12v power block that is required near the CPU socket and shouldn't be plugged in there.

If those extra 4 pins on a 24 pin block are not required it shouldn't be plugged in anywhere.
