Looking for a 400w PSU with over 80-85% efficency at all usages (80plus) So far I've found the following - any recomendations

Akasa AK-P040FG8-BKUK
Antec NeoHE 430W Modular
Antec TruePower Trio 430*
Antec Phantom 500W Hybrid (bit pricey)
Coolermaster RS-430-ASAA*
FSP 400-60GLN
Silverstone SST-ST50EF*
Seasonic SS400HT*

*not on OCuK, but should be?

shamely bump as this part of the forum moves fast (on page 3 in 16h)

Antec NeoHE 430W Modular currenly wining on cost/noise +modular but is below 80% at low load :( and only just 80 at max (85% at 50%)

might get the 500 so that actual loading will be more towards middle of range and therefore at 83-85%.

Thoughts please

The Enermax Liberty PSU's are great, there all around 80% efficient

I've heard good things about these - but there max eff is 80% but drops into 70's at high and low end looking for something better (I fold 24/7 so electric bill is an issue)

None of those psus have passed 80 plus.
These psus have passed 80 plus certification.
Take a look at http://www.80plus.org/index.htm for more info.

The closest i think you can get is a Seasonic, as the seasonics that are certified for 80 plus are oem only but the design is incredibly similar to the one used on the S12 series and thus these come extremely close to passing 80 plus.

You should read SPCRs Powersupply Fundamentals and Recomendations article.

80 PLUS APPROVED

The SS-xxxHT Active PFC F3 models have all been 80 PLUS certified. Regular readers of SPCR (and dedicated observers of the power supply scene) will know about 80 PLUS. SPCR provided news coverage about this initiative to promote the use of efficient power supplies in computers. There was also related discussion on page three of the article, A New Energy Star.

80 PLUS is described as "a national buy-down program for desktop computers and desktop-derived servers that contain highly efficient power supplies." The program invites submissions of PSUs, which are tested, and if the units pass, they become 80 PLUS approved. The test is quite tough: It calls for 80% or better efficiency at 20%, 50% and 100% of a PSU's rated power output. When a system integrator uses any 80 PLUS certified PSUs in systems, they can receive rebates through the 80 PLUS program, ostensibly to offset the initial higher cost of these highly efficient PSUs. You can check out all the details of the program, administered by Ecos Consulting, a company that "only undertakes projects that make a positive environmental impact", at the 80 PLUS web site.

The Seasonic SS-400HT APFC F3 was the first PSU to be approved by the 80 PLUS program. There are now four Seasonic PSU models on the approved products list. At time of posting, three other brands each feature a model on the an 80 PLUS approved PSU list.

What all this means to the end user is that the S12-500 and S12-600 should be >80% efficient at all power loads above 100W and 125W respectively. In SPCR's test rig, the S12-430 achieved the requisite >80% efficiency between 90W and 250W load but fell shy of it at maximum load. The 500 and 600 shouild fare better.
And take note of this:

ERRATA!
August 3, 2005

It came to our attention recently that the S12-500 and S12-600 are NOT 80 Plus approved, as thought previously. Seasonic's 80 Plus approved models are special OEM variants of the SS-400HT, SS-500HT and SS-600HT. The S12-500 / 600 have the same basic design, mechanically and electronically, but with longer output cables and the black paint finish, along with the box, manual and other accessories. The S12-500 and S12-600 are best viewed as variants of the SS-xxxHT OEM line. The 80 Plus approved SS-400HT, SS-500HT and SS-600HT models are OEM variants that come with special 80 Plus label.
This does not change the rest of the contents of our review nor our opinion of the S12-500/600.
So i recomend the S12 430, which should be extremely close to 80 plus requirements and as a result of higher efficiently has a lower heat output so it extremely quiet aswell. Review at SPCR here.

I have one of those coolermasters, i think you should avoid it as its not that quiet and hasn't got as much power in the right place unlike the Seasonic. Mine has been replaced with an S12 500.

Apart from the seasonic and the siverstone that is ;)

I started my list from that site and added other that had evidence of 80plus complience - power graph (abet not independantly) that OCuK sold.

http://www.akasa.co.uk/akasa_english/spec_page/psu/spec_ak_p040fg8_bk.htm

But many thanks for the link to SPCR words - just what I was looking for.
And the 30dB of the coolermaster was indead putting me off.

Ohh i beg your pardon. I thought that was the retail seasonic and i didn't take a proper look at the silverstone.
As i said the retail Seasonics are so similar to the oem ones that pass 80 plus its not worth the effort of getting hold of an exotic psu that does pass as i don't think it would be noticably better than a retail Seasonic.
