hi

i now have

1x - Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

2x - 2GB kit (1GBx2) DDR2 PC2-5300 CL=5 UNBUFFERED NON-ECC DDR2-667 1.8V

1x - Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.4ghz) Socket 775 FSB1066 4MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor

1x - BFG GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB GDDR3 DVI HDCP HDTV out PCI-E

a couple of harddrives and a dvd burner

or a whole lot of useless metal and plastic.. because i dont have a 24pin cable from the power unit.

would anyone be able to recommend one to me? from the mb's manual i think 500w would be enough but i'd rather go to 600w just to be safe.

if anyone could help that would be great - thanks

that one seems to be a modular one... i dont really feel confident with those.. as the last time i installed one i blew my motherboard up :)

any recommendations on one that has the cables just coming out of the back? id feel more comfortable with that.

Seasonic above an Antec any day. Corsair slightly above a Seasonic (same company, but better components and longer guarantee). I'm an Enermax fan myself.

I need to ask....how, exactly? each cable has its own plug, they are all different. its not like you can mix them up.

The corsair's are the best psu's at their pricepoints. it would be utterly stupid not to get one:)

@ OP

It would actually be foolish not to buy a modular PSU. They are really not complicated, and the 520W Corsair would suit your needs perfectly.

Modular PSUs are not 'superior' to non-modular, it is not 'foolish to buy non-modular'.

Its a very specific choice about minor cooling issues (less wires) that adds a very significant point of failure to the PSU. Each has their pros and cons. Make an educated choice about which you prefer.

Having said that I have a modular Enermax Liberty.

EDIT to add - hey Risz - was that a Hiper that blew before?

who said that? the corsair is the best psu at that price point regardless of that. being modular is just bonus. its foolish not to buy the corsair because it is the best. period. it uses the best components, its one of the quietest you can buy and it has the longest warranty of any psu you can buy today. That is why its foolish to choose something else.

Adding an extra socket between the power supply and the end of the wires adds a point of failure that you do not have with non-modular PSUs. Further, if the connection contacts aren't secure, the power is not as clean as it could be.

I am sure the sockets are well designed. However they are still sockets.

The advantage of Modular is airflow/wire tidyness. It is not however 'for free', there is a new point of failure.

Anecdotal evidence suggests the Hiper modulars are all going down whilst the non-modualr ones are still working like troopers. However that bit of drama aside - the engineering principal i have noted above is sound.

I meant that it would be foolish to not buy a Corsair just because of its modular design. At no point did I say that modular PSUs are superior, so please don't put words into my mouth.

Direct quote. I was not quoting you directly in my post. Now I am. I should have used italics rather than airquotes. Apologies if you took offence.

But if something goes wrong with it and you have to RMA it to Corsair then it has to be shipped to California whereas other good quality PSUs can be RMA'd within the UK (Antec is just as bad as it has to be shipped to the Netherlands)!
