Hi all,

My E6600 bundle is due to arrive tomorrow along with other bits and bobs for my new system. I got the Asus TA210 case for this without PSU because I am planning to run this with my old VERY cheap 480w PSU.

Question is, will this £18 PSU do the job, it is rated at 480watts, what are the downside of using these cheap PSUs for the E6600 chip (ATi 1950 Pro too).

The downsides are... you may suffer shutdowns, random reboots in games and in the worst case it could blow and take out some of those components you are purchasing. I would highly recommend investing in a decent branded PSU. If you don't have much money go for an Akasa. :)

Thanks.

I am quite lagged behind the hardware scene at the moment, what's all these ATX 2.0, 2.01, 2.2 PSUs.

The case being delivered is a Asus TA210, which one will this case take.

Also, what's the recommended wattage for the E6600 + ATi 1950 Pro, No other fancy hi-tech stuff, 1 HDD, 1 DVDR that's all.

You have to remember that the PSU is the backbone of the system, it provides power to all those quality components that make up your build. If you invest in a no-frills £20 piece of junk (thats what they are) then you are going to encounter problems. I have been there myself and many others on here have also. Its not worth it in the long run, invest in a quality PSU.

I would recommend 450-500W, this allows a moderate overclock and comfortable room for those components. Anything from Antec, Akasa, FSP.

Definately don't risk all that on an £18 cheapo PSU, as if it goes it could take your whole rig with it, where as a decent PSU will only take itself out if it goes, Corsair 520w will power all that fine, excellent PSU's and very highly rated on here. :)

Sorry, forgot to mention I will not be overclocking this system as it's for my work mainly and maybe some casual games. Reliability is first priority for this setup.

I would sugges this then.. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-004-AK

It has reasonably rated rails that should power that GPU and other items easily. Its the rails that are quoted that you can trust from these manufacturers - the non branded ones quote them but don't actually meet them and thus experience failures, the build quality of the components inside them just aren't up to scratch - you can't expect much from £18. You pay for what you get basically.

Thanks for the quick and meaningful replies lads, I think I am going to go for the Zalman solution for its quietness, I sometimes leave it on over night for long file transfers.

:)

Have a friend who refused to buy anything more then QTec's because he didnt like the idea of spending silly amounts on a PSU, yet he'd spend £300 on a graphics card.

I'll say this much.... some few years later he's learnt his lesson... and i did try to warn him.

As to the OP, if you can't put much cash into a PSU, the Akasa or FSP make good quality PSU's that are cheaper then the others. Tbh 400W would proberly be fine if you stick to a decent quality brand.
