Hi

My current PC is a nf7 XP2000 512mb ram machine so am looking to replace with an am2 3ghz 2gb ram spec.

Having to read up on the current tech and need to know what PSU wattage I will need as some are showing 850W and £100+!

What boards/cpu's require that sort of power? Is 500W ample for me?

A 400w decent brand is far better than a 580w nasty brand.

Corsair, Enermax, Seasonic, Akasa, Antec, OCZ and Tagan are the ones to go for.

May I just ask, why are you going AM2 and not Core 2 Duo?

The figure I see bandied about a lot is that you want 30A on your psu's 12v rails to be sure of running any single graphics card out there (and the system that goes with it, naturally).

I think the AM2's give better value or is this not the case anymore with price drops by both intel and amd?

All my machines since 2001 have been AMD based. I have always used Enermax 350-450 watts in the past.

I will be doing mainly browsing, home video editing, gaming, maybe serato for dj-ing.

Core 2 Duo's give a lot more performance and they overclock like beasts. They're priced no higher than AM2s.

Will this mean going back to Nvidia for the gfx as I've been using ATI.

So what are the 800w psu's for ? quad core?

No, you can use whatever graphics card you like with any CPU.

Ridiculously high powered PSU's are for two those that have 10+ hard disks, multiple processors, quad SLi and loads of optical drives. Any user that has a single graphics card, single CPU and less than 8 HDD's will never need more than 520w.
