Hi my friends pc just blew up due to apparently the heatsink fan failing, Now he's looking for a fairly cheap upgrade, he will be using the same ram (2-4gb ddr2), dvd rom, case and hard drives.

He will be getting a Phenom 9600 X4, have 3 hard disks, 9800GT hoping to upgrade to sli. Now can anyone recommend a psu and what wattage to get.

Also recommend a motherboard plz, Thx

M/B wise you dont have much choice, if its AM2 socket and youre looking to SLI theres only 4 through OCUK, Id recommend one of the asus M3N-HT ones like this one here
PSU theres much more options, go for OCZ, Corsair or Enermax in the 600W range, this OCZ would be about right

Factory overclocked 9800GT is ~83W, Phenom 9600 probably slightly less so we'll end up to around 300W peak draw with everything.
Rather hard to find quality PSU incapable to that, 500W models have more than enough reserve.

Nearly all FSP Epsilon based PSUs suffer from highish or over the specs ripple.
Fact that some memory brands (Corsair) have very good PSUs doesn't mean that all of them use equally high quality OEMs.

IIRC AMD started including thermal throttling and shutdown to their CPUs already many years ago so that hypothesis sounds rather doubtful.

Thx for the helpful replys, how much difference would it make if I were to decided to put in an ati 4750 instead of the 9800gt, psu power requirement wise
