I'm running an 8800GT with a old 380w (or thereabouts) PSU.

Will this affect the performance of the card in any way?

I haven't noticed anything myself however it did easily become unstable in my nooby attempts at overclocking.

The instability whilst overclocking *could* be PSU related... but I doubt it.

If your system is solid as a rock, be happy with the PSU.

Although note, extra stress on it could cause early failure.

What is the rest of your system like? Tbh I can't really see a 380W PSU supporting an overclock on todays hardware.

same setup as me, or close to it... though i'ma be running my 8800GT off of a 580W PSU. i suggest you change the PSU - 380W leaves little room for expansion

To be fair, the mobo and gfx was a stop gap u/g to see me through to a Nehalem and G200/R700 so I'll not be adding anything else.

Can't see any reason to change your PSU. My 8000 GT clocks miserably with a Corsair HX 520W, so I'd say your problems aren't power related. All you'll gain by getting a new PSU is future proofing and a big hole in your wallet. 8800 GT isn't that power hungry anyway, my PC never tops 200W when gaming (monitor not included).
