PSU and power up

just finished the rebuild and still not a sound from the PSU:(

You've got the power switched on at the mains and on the PSU?

You've definately connected the power switch to the correct header on the motherboard? That would be the 2 pins with the red backround in the image I posted above (next to the yellow ones).

You've connected the 24 pin and 8 pin power cables to the motherboard and ant power cables for the graphics card?

all the manual refers to not doing is using the 1394 in the UISB 2/1 header. so ive put this into the USB3 header.

all my USB 2/1 headers are all being used. I cannot use the USB 3 header as the pins are slightly smaller and the USB 2/1 pins wont fit into it.

The motherboard doesn't have FireWire (1394) so if you have a cable from your case for that don't plug it into anything.

If you plug it into a USB header it might go bang.

Yes

Definitely

Yes

ok ok so just tried it yet again but this time i switched around what was going into the two USB headers (one is USB1 and one is USB2).

no PSU fan power up however my LCD on the case came on for about 4 seconds then powered down. now trying it again i cannot replicate this.

strange....

Ive plugged that into the USB3 header (the one next to the USB header that i cannot use due to the pin configuration).

Tried it again but nothing. How can this be!?

The motherboard doesn't have 1394 and plugging it into a USB header could cause damage.

Take the 1394 cable out of the USB header and don't plug it into anything.

Try starting it again when you've removed the cable.

Done and nothing. Im starting to presume i will be spending my last pennies taking this to a shop for testing...?

If all the IT guy did was unplug the cables and you've plugged them all back in correctly then everything should work unless something has got damaged in the process.

Did you have the 1394 connector plugged in when it worked before you took it to the IT guy?

to be very honest i cannot be sure however i seem to recall that i had it plugged into a USB 3 header and as mentioned the kit ran fine until it got dismantled.

can a shop test my PSU, and parts of the motherboard to ascertain whether its damaged?

I'm sure a shop that does PC repairs could have a look at it for you.

You can try testing the PSU yourself if you're brave enough to try the paperclip trick.

Make sure the PSU is disconnected from all your PC components if you try it (except perhaps a fan to provide a small load) and disconnect the PSU from the mains before inserting the paperclip.

As soon as you switch the PSU on with the paperclip inserted it should start up.
