yeh i woke up in the middle of the night and went to use the toilet and seen the lights blinking on my modem so i went over and made sure my computer was off by flicking the switch on the back and ....kaboom!

the thing went like a chinese firecracker i nearly cacked myself i tell you! it tripped the electric out and the residual circuit breaker in the main fuse box!

it was practically a new machine! (new motherboard and cpu) id only used it a totall of about 8 hours at most! but the thermaltake psu was getting on for 3 years old!

so my point is do you think the psu has totally wiped out the computer (motherboard and cpu) or will i be ok with a new (decent) psu!

cheers!

yeh it certainly has! ......the motherboard was only a cheap asrock dual sata bought from here! but il be gutted if its blown the 4000+ i was just getting round to cranking it up to 3ghz

............is there any way to check the motherboard for tell tale damage!

same thing happened to me a while back. Built a new rig for a mate, had been running in fine for a week. He comes around to collect it, I turn it on to install some software for him and the psu suddenly has sparks flying out of it

It didnt damage any other components though, I'm sure your's will be fine.

Should I replace my 2.5 year old "ThermalTake Silent PurePower 560w" PSU? I always thought it was pretty good..? :(

hey yeh i think mine was one of them thermaltake silent purepower560w psu!
it was just over 2 years old i just checked my online receipt!

i was running a antec truecontrol 2 550w on this computer and that blew after only 10 months but i got a antec truepower trio 650w as a replacement!

so i dont seem to have much luck with power supplies

i nearly squeezed one out though when that thermaltake blew though :D

Ahh power supplies, the bane of my job!
In most cases I find it's only the power supply that's dead, other components are normally fine.
Surge protection in decent power supplies normally kill the power supply before it can fry other components.

oh thats good news then i might order a corsial hx 620w but im gonna want to throw it in my quad core system a few months down the line will this psu be able to power a quad core and a 8800gtx what do you think! or should i just get a cheapo psu!

I really pushed the boat out and got an Antec True-Blue 480w for my AMD Duron 800 system so I'd last a while... and I'm still using it, must be 6 years old now? Just put it into a Core 2 Duo 6400 system with an x800XT and it's still rock stable. It still rarely revs up, so I don't think it's stressed even now. I guess I'd be in trouble if I SLI'd it, but 480w (with very low power on the 12v rails by recent supplies) is fine. It's a bit noisy, so I might change it for a Corsair (and get a 24 pin ATX connector, woot!), but not because I need more juice.
