Was running a Intel Core 2 Duo E2140 overclocked to 3ghz, along with 1 hard drive, 2 gigs of memory and a 8800gts, bought a new Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP-HC 24" moniter and had it running for 30 mins. Was enjoying a good game of cs source on max and then BANG!. Loud pop sound came from the pc and a flash of light. Knew then my pc was buggered, tried to restart but nothing happened. Looks like my psu blew up and took my motherboard with it. Just thought Id post as a warning to others, dont run a decent rig on a crap psu. The culprit, an Akasa Ultra Quiet 460W Paxpower. I knew it wasnt a great psu but thought it would be adequate enough to run what I had, my computer aint that high spec! Had to order a new Gigabyte GA_P35_DS3R along with a Corsair HX 520W. Hope this one does the job, I heard they're reliable. What annoys me is the fact my pc has run fine for months and as soon as I get a new moniter and up the res, it decides to blow. Ahwell, enough of the rant. Next time Ill never skimp on the power supply!

Most Akasas are actually quite good units, being built by Enhance. I suspect however that you were running yours at or near its maximum given that it only has two 12v rails rated for 14A & 15A. I can't find a combined figure but the 210W max of the 3.3v+5v rails suggests somewhere around 20-22A, not good for a system based around an 8800 :)

So in some ways it deserves applause for holding out so long!

bit worried now about my new e2180 with nforce ultra motherboard and x1950pro graphics (running max 1280 x 1024) - on a winpower 450wpsu I got with a case for £20.
