Last night, while processing some photos, my computer and monitor both suddenly turned off - I can't remember now if there was any bang at all.
Now I get no response whatsoever from the computer. No LEDs light on the motherboard, and there's no hint of any of the fans stirring if I plug it in. Dead as the infamous parrot... The only sign of any life is a very very faint buzzing or hum from the PSU when plugged in and turned on.
All the sockets in my bedroom also got turned off somehow when the computer went, so at first I thought that this was the problem, so went to the fusebox to flip the fuse back. However, it refused to stick and kept flipping back to the blown position. After I unplugged the computer, however, I was able to flip the fuse to on at the fusebox and after a few minutes plugged the computer back in without throwing the fuse again.
There is a slight burnt smell to the PSU and slight black scorch marks on the inside of the case by the PSU.
I'm out of my depth with this stuff, but I'm guessing that it's pretty sure to be a blown PSU, and the real dreaded question is what if anything it has taken with it when it went...
The case is an Antec SLK3700AMB with the supplied Antec SL350P 350W SmartPower Power Supply. I bought it and put the computer together in June 2004, so it's just under 3 years old. It's been running 2 IDE and 2 SATA HDDs, 1 CDRW, 1 DVD, 1 Floppy, cheap graphics card and Terratec DMX 6fire soundcard on an Abit NF7-S motherboard - have I been pushing the PSU too hard with that load?
I'm wondering what the best next step is for me - I could try and RMA the power supply, or replace it in the current set up with a completely new one - trouble there is that I could face the prospect of finding that the motherboard or other component have been harmed, but only once a new PSU arrived, since I have no spare set up to test with, which would be a real pain in the...
If I could afford it I'd love to take the opportunity to put together a nice new high capacity server-type computer instead, but am really struggling for money right now.
It's highlighted how utterly dependent I am on my computer, totally lost without it. Urghhh, just what I didn't need at the moment...
