My one year 1.5 yr old computer has finally died, well the PSU has neway :( Was using the computer earlier for approximately 5 minutes and all of a sudden then computer restarted followed by smoke and burning smell. All i hear now from the PSU is a whirring noise which suggest the PSU has died, the PSU in question is a 450W Smart Power PSU which was supplied with the Sonata II case.

My rig:

AMD X3800+
2GB Ram
7800 GTX Graphics Card
2 Sata HDD's

I think that the PSU supplied was pushed too hard for the rig above.... as sometimes when my external harddrive was on during boot up, it would just hang on the XP screen!

Can anyone suggest a new PSU for me which will also help to be handy when i come to upgrade the comp say in 1/2 years time.....? I jus hope that it hasnt killed off any other components as i plan to upgrade later and not now when money is a bit short :(

That's pretty normal, happens when you leave a floppy in too

Corsair as above, or an Antec Truepower which I can recommend personally :)

Nah not too bothered about the SLI, im not into gaming dat much tbh. Only the odd Counterstrike now and then :D Fingers crossed that only my PSU is dead. Do Antec's often blown up just like dat.....

Well my 620W Enermax = http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-024-EN&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=

went Phutt BANG! yesterday so I replaced it with this one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-030-EN&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat= at 850W it should be bombproof for a while.

Enermax do 3 year warranty on it so i've sent the 620W back to Enermax and I'll sell the new one when it comes back.

Must say though well pleased with the service from OcUK. Ordered at 4:12pm yesterday and it arrived 10:10 this am. Installed up and running by 11am :D

BLOW UP like boom take out the whole pc?

It would be a very extreme case for the PSU to 'blow up', it may well happen if there is a fault with a cheap power supply, but not with the high quality makes. Usually the worst that could happen is that the PSU takes out the rest of your system when it dies.

got to be careful with this PSU - I have it - it dont fit in the Cooler Master 830 case without taking out the top Fan ! Couldnt believe it when it arrived - thought Id bought the biggest case in the world... sadly... the enermax 850 is a monster !

nice and quiet tho - just thought Id point this out for reference.

Heh, Yes I know, Mines stucking out the back of the case :D I have the Stacker 830 as well!

Still its the nuts so I'm a happy bunny.

Oh and yes it did go bang! Thats also why I bought an enermax in the first place. they have overload and short circuit protection and are extreamly unlikly to take other components out when they die. Not impossible but still better than the cheap psu's you can buy. As usual you get what you pay for......

it does fit in ok - if you remove the top fan - and bend the piece of metal (one flap if I recall) - then it goes in no problemo.

Unless you really want the cooling ---- oh and the plastic fan holder on the side door dont go on if you have a Tuniq tower ! lol

sorry for OT - Im outta here :)
