switched on the system earlier today and then a power outage in the mains shorted and blew the psu (pop and smell).

The system is old, 2.4C r9800 so I'm wondering if its worth buying a new psu and any other rep components which also shorted or if I should just buy a new rig and chuck this one out? Is it a good time to upgrade?

it may be easier to just get a new rig as sourcign replacement parts may be difficult.
give us a budget and we could try to make you a rig that is as cheap and as futureproof as possible. a list of tasks it must carry out will also be ideal

Hello

Well budget I think would be around 1000-1250 with or without TFT and a heavy emphasis on silence.

I haven't decided what to do with the remaining components of this system but if its only the Psu then I'll replace that and give the entire system Inc monitor and keyboard etc to a friend and just go for all new spec.

Oh and it's only used for gaming and browsing.

hows this for a start.

i dont think the graphics card is silent,
it needs a case, KB, mouse, monitor etc
the pc is more geared towards gaming, if the use is something different then the spec can be altered to more suit your needs

^^the above spec looks rather good to me.

for case i would recomend the p180/p182

Antec P182 Super Midi Tower Case - No PSU (Gun Metal Black)

and this is a nice kb and mouse setup. if you need one.

and think on b4 you put your new system together pop your new psu into your old system and see if it boots/works.

ok ive just tested the system with a friends PSU and it works fine. So first things first I need to pick up a replacement for this. Is there a good ultra quiet one for a decent price? Prolly doesn't need to be more than 350w...

Also the spec looks pretty good thanks - couple of things I would change and I'd like your opinion:

Tuniq tower for thermal right ultra extreme.
corsair 520w for seasonic 500w
seagate 7200? Any particular reason? Ive heard the samsungs are quieter

Antec p180/182 - yep heard nothing but good things about this.

Little concerned about the ip35 too - it's effectively at the end of its life without PCI x16 and DDR3

the seagate is faster i think, especially if its one of the single platter ones but samsungs are quieter.

the thermalright ultra extreme would be my choice too if your budget allows, just remember your 120mm fan

seasonic makes the corsair HX520 so changing may make little difference to the quality of the PSU in your machine.

ddr3 isnt really needed as of yet, ddr2 is fast enough for most needs anyway

the ip35 pro does have 16x pcie just not in crossfire, and you will not be crossfiring anyway as i speced you a nvidia card not an ATi one

ddr3 should be avoided for a year or two unless you want to devote your life to running 3Dmark06. its far to over priced in comparisson to dd2 and gives almost no performance gain at the moment. once intel has its memory controler onchip though that should be different. ironicly amd could make better use of this memory standard but that wont be happening until the am3 platform hits.

btw if you really are into quiet the p182 (not p180) is geard to utilise external watercooling solutions like the reserator1 v2

a friend has one they are quite good and totaly silent. it also looks rather cool. little pricey though but acceptable considering performance. imho its not just a water cooling solution its desk art :P

I think I'd rather go for silence over speed unless the samsung is slower by 50% or something silly like that. Btw which Samsung are we talking about? I don't need large storage capacity. My current drive is 120gb and I struggle to fill it.

Yep I'l definately go for the thermal right ultra extreme but can you recommend the fan to go with it? I'll probably need 3 or 4 of them for the case and the cpu and i'll hook them up to a fan controller. I don't care if you recommend the most expensive ones just want the best in silence and performance.

I'm still not 100% convinced about DDR2 over DDR3 unless by the time it becomes worthwhile this chipset will be all but dead and so requires a full upgrade anyway? Speaking of which, how far along are we on the core2 quad chipsets? Is the IP35 and current quad cores going to be around for much longer or is it a dead tech already? I mean should I wait a month, is there an upgrade coming out?

Also one more question if you don't mind (Sorry ive been out of this so long!)...Is the GTS really the card to go for at over 200? The GTX ultra is only a little bit more so I would think it's more worthwhile to go for this one no?

The Key here that I'm really trying to ensure I stick to is the fact that I don't have time to tinker with systems anymore, and I don't want to frankly. I don't upgrade often and I don't keep up with new developments and I don't swap things out and re-run benchmarks trying to squeeze every drop out etc.

So it's really important to me that I get it right from the get-go. I don't mind paying more now because obviously this averages out later if im not upgrading along the way. I just want to get the very best in terms of silence/performance atm.

Thanks

Hi

A friend actually had the zalman and wasn't impressed with it at all and sold it about a week later so I think I want to steer away from that one. While watercooling is an option its probably not worthwhile for me as I don't really have the time to keep it maintained plus from what I've read it's not that much quieter over air cooling and doesn't keep temps that much more down until you start overclocking heavily. (in other words if you're a relatively light user like me, you're likely to hassle yourself for not much of an improvement is the jist that I get).

Am I totally off the mark on this one?

if you consider the fact that a p35 based MB with pc2-6400 ram will allow you to OC a q6600 to at least 3GHz in most cases unless your cpu doesnt OC, i would think it is far from being dead technology, the only reason to get ddr3 is for benchmarking as realworld performance is not noticible or maybe even non-existant. as for p35, if you are not usign crossfire with highend ATi cards, it would be fine. the only thing you will loose is PCIE2.0 which the 9800s may need, and form what you said from your post, it doesnt seem to bother you as you will not be upgrading the PC an x38 chipset will give you the 2 16xPCIE slots and pcie2.0. penryn or 45nm quads will work on most if not all p35 based MBs, but the only one out to date is the qx9650 which is a bit out of your budget. they will run cooler then the conroe quads though. for fans i recommend you look at the shjarkoon silent eagles. the GTX would be my card of choice, if the extra cost isnt a problem

understood on the DDR3 point.

the PCIe 2.0 point is a little worrying - when are the 2.0 cards and 45nm quads due out?

thanks ill look into the fans you mentioned.

how bout a soundcard and tft?

im not sure how backwards compatible pcie 2.0 is with current tech, but as for the release dates of the new cards and cpus, its roumered to be sometime in q1 or q2 of next year. no real dates have been given.

since im still using a 5year old 17" TFT and a 21" crt, i will not advise you on monitors
as for sound, i am using onboard sound but the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer 7.1 Sound Card is suppose to be quite good.

hehe understood I'm also still using a 5 year old TFT (hyundai q17). I guess a nice 20" or something wouldn't hurt.

So in fairness would say it actually makes more sense to get the x35 now so that way at the very least I am sure to be able to upgrade the gfx if I wanted to? This and solid state HDD are the only things I'd consider swapping out due to ease.
