Ok i'm about to replace a friends PSU for him :) (as smoke started coming from it and it really started to smell ).

anyhow he has -
intel pentium 4 processor
1GB Ram
Single HD (Sata)
Single DVD driver (IDE)

I'm thinking a 350W would easily cover it maybe this it's about the right price.

Is this about right? Or should for future proofing would it be better to got for maybe a 400W?

what graphics card has he got?

its usually the most or 2nd most demanding component in terms of power draw

It probably will be enough but as jak731 says the graphics card could make a difference to that position, given the age of the system it doesn't seem hugely likely it will be incredibly power hungry but it doesn't hurt to check.

woops totally forgot about that. tbh i'm not 100% sure  it's ATI card - i know it doesn't have any dedicated power cables (no 6pin connector) just draws power from the motherboard. and it didn't appear to be a full size card - hope this is enough to go on!

i kinda didn't even think about it since it didn't have any dedicated power.

Sounds like it should be fine then, it isn't enough information to narrow it down much beyond saying it can't be all that powerful if it draws all its power from the PCI bus, perhaps 95/9600 sort of level or below.
