PSU choice

Good Morning! (Even though its monday, so far it is)

I am getting ready to meet bulldozer, even though it might be out in years time, never the less, my current psu is Akasa PowerMax 850W. Its been serving me well for years, never had a single problem with it, however, its based on 2 x 12v rails, when most modern psu's are based on 4. Great psu it is, still raised a question if i should sell and get another psu. My current choice is lying somewhere between 750W Corsair HX Series Modular or 750W Antec HCG-750 High Current Gamer.

Does anyone know if i should make that choice or stick with the current psu, it does support everything you throw at it, also has 6/8 pins for gfx cards, (i'd need 8pin for asus 2gb 6950)

Any input would be great, from those that own those actual psus or some great ones i missed for the simmilar price (around a £100) and 750W or thereabouts

personally i would only change psu if i was having problems from it or if it's no longer good enough to power my system,i had 3 corsair's go bad all 3 with the same fault (voltages aren't stable under heavy load,i would not recommend corsair its very bad brand at least for me it was) this is why i went for the xfx 850w pro modular which is rock solid under heavy load & energy efficient too.

Generally speaking, you should only upgrade a PSU if you're upgrading your graphics card, or if it's struggling/failing/already has failed. Besides, I'd wait until you actually make the upgrade- buying a part in advance is always a bad move.

as905, it sounds like you've been very unfortunate, but it is sadly just a case of bad luck. Corsairs are very solid-built units with a good warranty and one of the best RMA procedures there is, in case something goes wrong.

That said, XFX is probably the best make as they use nothing but rebadged Seasonics, whereas Corsair use a mixture of Seasonic and CWT units.

corsair is about the best brand out there as they are relabelled seasonic PSU's. i have no idea why changing to an XFX PSU removed your problems because they are also relabelled seasonic PSU's.

did you change from an old model corsair to a new model XFX by any chance?

Corsair have great warranty terms and most of their PSUs are excellent. They're a mixture of CWT, Seasonic and Flextronics.
XFX's units are all rebadged Seasonics at the minute.
If you wanted to replace your Akasa I'd recommend the XFX 750, it's one of the best price/performance units on the market.

Thanks for the input guys, gonna wait a bit then and see how it handles dozer and 6950, if anything will consider xfx/corsair

The HX850, which is the Corsair equivalent of the XFX 850W modular, is a CWT unit, which is slightly less reliable than Seasonic but the HX850 is very well made, so it's likely just a run of bad luck.

Waiting is the best plan anyway, good choice OP
