PSU confusion

Hi all
Got another thread going re: a new build - I'm looking at this lot as my spec http://img157.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=72509_520_rig_122_1068lo.jpg

The Case/psu combo has good reviews but other threads on here are recomending psu's of 5/6/700w and upwards...

Is this purely because of the beefy graphics cards that most seem to have?

I'll be running a bottom end card as I'm not a gamer, will that psu be ok for me? I might add a drive or two (DVD, extra HDD maybe!)

thanks for any advice....

Yeah, we use beefy PSU's because we have components that use more watts / draw more amps from rails and a lot of us also overclock.

One rule always to remember though, always buy a decent brand which has a reputation of being stable and reliable. :)

Pretty much moggsy, any supply from a reliable brand will do until you are talking about overclocked quad-core cpus and 8800/2900 series cards in sli/crossfire. A lot of people making the choice to get a more expensive supply like the Corsair, do so not just because of how powerful it is, but because it is quiet and modular. I personally went for a modular supply even though I know it to be overkill for my system (I simply couldn't be doing with yet another case that had cables cluttering it up).

Most people go over the top on wattage. There was a good thread on here before which shows you don't need an especially high watt PSU, even for higher end systems.

You'll find something like this would be more than adequate :)

Hmmm!

The reviews on this seem good - see HERE but it's only 430w.

I'm thinking of doing a little bit of oc-ing - nothing major - but after my current machine that sounds like a mini-tornado, I would like a nice quiet rig.
Can someone recomend a quiet, decent quality case/psu combo that can match my requirements for roughly the same price?

Nullvoid - what's a 'modular' psu as opposed to standard one?

Thanks....

Your graphics card won't draw that much power, so its only the processor which is going to pull some volts, even then the Core 2s are good anyway.

That one should be fine. The modular ones basically mean you only plug in the cables that you need, ie. you can pull out spare molex cables etc from the PSU, which makes things neater inside the case :)

My Tagan 430w is powering a Core 2 Quad 6600 @ 3.2GHz, X1900 XTX and watercooling :)

Yep Duke has it covered. For a pictorial example:

Toughpower 1200w non-modular version - http://www.jonnyguru.com/review_details.php?id=111 - see the pictures of the unit with a mass of cables coming out of it.

Toughpower 1200w modular version - http://www.jonnyguru.com/review_details.php?id=107 - look how much cleaner everything can be when you only plug in what you need!

The ideal is a 100% modular design (most 'modular' supplies still have a certain number of fixed cables, like the above toughpower) such as in the silverstone decathlon series - http://www.jonnyguru.com/review_details.php?id=112

I just bought this lot from the shop on friday and its running like a dream -

Instead of making a new thread I thought I'd ask here.

When OC'ing Quads, 8800 GTX's etc how much more power will they actually need/take?
well ive managed to get my pc to draw 380w from the wall. thats a stock gtx and a 3.3ghz c2d. full load, 2 instances of superPI and 3dmark as well. im guessing you could be pushing 450w quite easily with a fairly heavy overclock on a gtx and a quad
