Behind you... Naked!
Just need some clarification...

There is often an extra 4-pin power connection thats present on some motherboards

There is on some others an 8-pin connection right?

Now, on my Abit QuadGT, I have bought a 4 Pin to 8 Pin adapter and its fine.
It was als operfectly fine before that when I just connected the 4-pin connector directly to it, and ignored the other 4 pins.

Thats fine.

Now, I have run out of PSUs that have the 4 or 8 pin connections to the motherboard, however... I do have a couple of PSUs that have 6 Pins.

Now, I have rammed this onto the back of a Graphics card and thats got that working, but can I use that 6 pin connection in an 8-pin socket on a Motherboard and only have 2 pins missing?

Are they the right pinouts? - 12v and GND for each pair ?

The plug fits... Soem are rounded and some are square, but it fits just fine.

No. don't you'll damage your motherboard, you're motherboar will be able to support 4 or 8 pins, but 4 + 2 would almost certainly do damage and the arrangement of cables are almost definately different even if the shapes fit.

Yes, thanks... I just come back to say that I have realised that the 12v and GND are reversed...

PHEW!

This Mobo does not have the 4 pin connection anyway, jus tthe 8 so I will just see if it will go on that... I dont see why not.

Many thanks for the Quick reply though mate...

the 8 pin will fit as long as there is no obstruction in the place where the extra 4 pin should go or you could just dremel it to seperate the cables into 4+4pin.

What? Eh? No, its fine.

I only wanted to know about whether I could use 6 pin but its either 4 or 8, so, job done.

And FYI if the 4 has been blocked off, its usually a cap that you can flick off.
I have currently got 5 Mobos that have the 8-pin socket and a couple had 4 pins blocked off but I simply flicked the cap off.
If you have to dremmel it then thats an even worse plan than mine was.

I only asked about the 6-pin job simply because I am having a play with some older stuff and I have run out of decent PSUs and I have dug into my spares.

Ah, I see what you mean... you mean about fitting an 8-pin into the 4 pin socket on the Mobo!!!??

No its ok, I know that 4 pin and 8 pin are interchangeable ( Yes, provoding the 8pin plug has room ) but I was looking at the 6 pin you see... Thanks for that.

Oh, and thanks... The PC is running now.

I think I will give it to my daughters friend, cos her mum's fit.

so is her dad but hey.... LOL
