PSU dead, need advice

Yesterday evening I installed Windows 8 on a new 512 gb SSD... I was about to close the case. As soon as I flicked the switch back on I heard a low noise and some burnt smell coming from the PSU. It was an XFX XXX 650w. It itself was the RMA replacement of a same PSU that had suffered a similar fate one year earlier. Just tried the paperclip test. RIP.

Now I'm about to abandon ship so I was looking at the Seasonic x650. Is the price pr emium of the KM3 version over the regular KM worth it? In case it should too die, where do you have to send it? Will OCUK handle it if I buy it here? Or do I have to send it to the EU?

OCuK will cover the first year of warranty before you have to send overseas. It's unfortunate that your XFX PSU died, they're quality units made by Seasonic themselves! That Seasonic x650 will be a very good PSU, gold rated!

Thanks to both. I just ordered a new X650KM3. It was unfortunate indeed seeing as it was the second XFX XXX 650 who suffered the same fate. The first one lasted only 6 months; its replacement little more than a year.

Here's to hoping that the PSU was the only component that broke..

I just installed the new Seasonic X-650. As expected the PC now boots. I have one question though: in my case the PSU needs to be installed on the bottom. I placed it with the fan facing the mesh in the bottom. When I start the PC there's noise coming from the PSU, as if the fan was hitting something. But there is nothing there that it could hit.

It just does it at the beginning.. I think. I'm in the process of reinstalling everything and I haven't yet ran a game to put it under load.

Should I be worried?

It doesn't do any noise if it is mounted with the fan facing up, but I'm worried that if I leave it facing up, it could increase the overall temperature in the case.
