PSU died after setting computer to "sleep"?!

I was resuming my computer from sleep earlier, and just as "Resuming Windows" had finished, the computer turned itself off. And stayed off. Not even a motherboard light was on. And now I can't get it to turn on. I've tried removing the power cable, changing plugs, power cables etc, and still nothing. I assume this is a PSU issue rather than a motherboard issue? It's a Corsair TX650W that I bought 2.5 years ago. The motherboard I bought 2 weeks ago.

Is there anything else I can try to do to fix it? Is there any way I can be sure that it's the PSU?
 
You can try the PSU paperclip test.

Disconnect the PSU from all components before trying this.

Just have a fan connected to a molex connector so it has a little load on it.

This won't confirm the PSU is working properly but it will tell you if it's completely dead.
 
Apart from the paperclip test you will need to try it with another PC or try and power yours up with a spare PSU.
 
I did it, and after I unplugged everything I switched the PSU on, it kind of... sparked a bit and made a light pop/bang. I put the paperclip in anyway and the fan DID come on. What should I take from this?

That you probably need a new one
 
My concern now is that it did some damage to my motherboard or other components before I removed everything. Is that likely?

It is possible, but you won't be able to find out until you try and power it on again.
