My psu has been givng me problems all day today.. it was making that groaning electronic noisy like you get when two electrical cables that are supposed to be in full contact, haven't made it, and they're just touching [just about] and they make that weird eletrical noise.

Well I mistakenly though it was my hard drive, and I thought it might be one of these things when they boot up incorrectly and make a lot of noise for aday, but then fix themselves up the following day.

I even put my ear to it, and just made an assuption it must be the hard drive because that's where the noise was coming from.

then all of a suddent the computer shuts, down.

I assume the power supply is broken, at least I hope so, because I'd hate to replace my enture system, been there before, can't work out what is broken the mobo or cpu and then I have to upgrade the whole system because old parts are expensive, and it doesn't make sense to replace end of line components when I can get new line stuff for just a little bit more money.

So I open the case, and then get the bright idea to plug in an old 200w PSU I have lying around, it doesnt work, so then I replace the power cable. and voila!! it works.

I put thhe tagan530w PSU back in and then change the power cable, and it works, it powers up!. But then I see a flash come out the back of the PSU, it makes me loud noise, and I can smell the burning smell. Sort of like how you would imagine a firework would smell like.

But weird thing is the system is still working... I just booted it up now and Im even typing on it.. I checked the ram. the processor, the graphics card, they're all working perfectly fine.

It definately is the PSU that popped. But the weird thing is why the hell is it still working??

ok thanks for the tip.. I've completely taken out the psu and left it out the case looking through psu selection on ocuk in order to find a suitable one.

any recommendation for a modular ~530w psu?? my typical usage is actually far less sub 300w. 530 is more than enough for my "futureproof needs" as I am not a massive, game, I just use my current rig for word processing, vmware, and other stuff, and light video editing/photoshop use.

p.s. I took out the psu and took a wiff into the grills, the burning smell is still there, and now Im dead cert it's just the psu that's blown

p.p.s isn't tagan a reputable brand??

ive ordered the cx600, the modular thing in unnecessary, I'll just hide the extra caballing behind the hard drive cage.

Besides the antec modular already has lots of molexes that are permanentky connected to the psu [which is what i was trying to avoid as my components use sata power only]
