PSU fan always at max speed (loud!) - what are my options?

Nearly two years ago I bought a Primo Trinity PC from OcUK for my mum, and I've started to notice that the fan is really loud. I'm guessing it would be very unwise to just disable the fan? How easy is it to replace the fans?

The fan is permanently very loud, which makes me think that the system which adjusts fan speed based on system load isn't working properly, therefore replacing the fan wouldn't solve the problem completely?

It doesn't have an external pwm connector, and it isn't brand I recognise.

Will I have to chuck it and put in a different PSU?

It's quite likely that you will have to buy a new one. If the fan control circuit has blown then the only real thing you could do is install another fan with it's own fan control circuit and hope that it's aggressive enough/not too aggressive for your situation. Beyond that it just gets compilcated with building your own circuits, measuring temperatures and adjusting trimmers.

Doesn't sound a big loss if you can't even recognise the brand.

I've only opened one PSU but the fan circuit was just a inline thermistor glued/thermal pasted to the heat sink.

If it's as simple as that, it will be dead easy to change. And you could even use the above circuit as a temp fix.

That rather depends on the thermistor value and the fan it's attached to. You might get lucky and find it'll work but if the components are mismatched you could get startup issues where the voltage provided to the fan is too low.

Unless you know exactly what your doing I would avoid tinkering with your PSU & simply purchase a new one from a reliable brand. I'm guessing your out of warranty?
