PSU fan upgrade - is it possible?

i've always wondered that too. you would void your warranty opening it firstly secondly i dont think they plastic frame of a fan is in the psu, think just the blades are.

please correct me if im wrong.

yes it can be done there have been threads on it before it is slightly dangerous yes it voids your warently if you do you must make sure the fan spec that comes out is the same of better than the one that goes back in if you do make sure there is no power to it

well, this isn't extremely relevant but i replaced the psu fan in my G4 powermac... my word that thing was noisey... still is

So how does it work, levitation? :p It can be done, won't recommend it if you don't have experience with electronics and electrical safety knowledge. Depending on how the fans connected, you may have to join wires or isolate wires and connect the fan externally, have done most of my fan mods like this with fan controllers to get the right amount of noise/airflow ratio. Some fans aren't soldered, but again the connectors aren't quite standard.

Be very careful if you do open up your psu, switch mode power supplys store voltage on the main smoothing capacitor of around 300+ v DC, it will hurt like hell if that discharges across your hand.

So dont touch the board or any other components even after its switched off.

I replaced the fans in my old Q-Tec PSU :)

The fans I used (Ys-tech silents) pushed more air, yet ran at a lower db

That's one thing you'd have to make sure of, that the potential replacement fan would push around the same air as the fan it's replacing.
