PSU fans running from CPU header

Hey, i was just wondering if anyone has tried rerouting the fans from their PSU to their CPU or system fan headers, my PSU is 1kw and im only using about half that so the air coming out of the back was always cold but even then it insisted on running the fans at 1500 rpm, i tried putting resistors onto the fans to slow them down, which worked on the 80mm, but when i tried on the 140mm the PSU low fan speed warning buzzer kicked in, and even though it ran fine it was very loud and annoying, i tried finding the buzzer to remove it, but i think its buried deep inside the bundles of cables in the PSU somewhere so i gave in and just decided to solder the fans together and extend the cable to the Mobo headers.

I intend to set up the the fan speeds to increase when the CPU temp rises, as the PC will be under load and extra cooling on the PSU will proberbly be required. Could anyone suggest the best way of doing this plz? Atm i just have the CPU header set to voltage and speed to silent which i set in the bios, as they are 3 pin fans from the the PSU i figured that was best, but i dont know if this will speed up my fans automatically, or if i need a program so manually set the temp lvls required to speed up the fans.

I've always just used a fan controllower and havent had an air cooled system in over 10 years so i dont know much about setting up fan speeds and stuff, i normally just twirl a knob on the front of my PC if i want more cooling :)

Cheers for any help.

a 1.5k fan should not be that noisy, I'd swap it for a quieter design.

Assuming 500W output your PSU will have to shift around 70W of waste heat so it does need the fan to spin fairly quick to keep it cool and efficient.

i thought it wouldnt be running that speed unless it had to also, maybe theres some components that determine the speed of the PSU fans that dont actually give off much heat but need keeping very cool or somthing, the air coming out of hte back is always cold, and ive fitted a thermal sensor to the bottom of hte main heat sync running through the PSU and that hasnt gome over 30 degs yet under load.

Yeah i might do that also, had this PSU since 2006 so the fans have been running quite a while. Its running really quiet now using the silent profile, its silent when idle, and v quiet still under load.

edit: TBH untill i get a quieter HDD ordered theres no point replacing hte fans as the HDDs are by far the loudest thing now. ( cept for high fps coil whine :) )

Ive done it and works great! I have an old system here where I got really fussy about the cooling back around 2004ish. I swapped every single fan including the psu one. Initially had the psu fan running from the motherboard headers and then swapped to an extension onto a fan controller. The system has an Abit AI7 which I consider to be one of the best boards I have owned. It still soldiers on as my Wife uses it for work :)

I want to build her a more modern setup and have the old one back, but I am reluctant to mess with it. Sods law means something will go wrong lol.
