MY SPEC:

AMD FX 8320 CPU
GTX 670 2gb zotac GPU
8gb ram
500gb internal hard drive
cd/dvd r-w rom drive
3 x 80mm fans
450w XFX PSU

My PSU makes a clicking sound when I've maxed out graphics settings on a game. is it because my PSU ain't big enough? or is it faulty?

I added the CPU/GPU to my system at a later date and thought the PSU would have enough power for it altho when checking the box of the GPU it states it needs minimum 500w PSU.

any help would be great thanks.

It does sound like you are loading it have a look at this as it will give you a rough idea of your power requirements and IMO you only want to be operating your PSU at around 60% to 70%

And as said above I think you need to be looking at around 600w

Have you got any over clock on the 8320 ? this will also add to your power requirements.

No overclock on anything. so having listened to all your comments is it safe to say i need a more powerful psu? If so has my 450w psu become damaged? and could it have damaged any other components? Having turned down the graphics settings on my game theres no clicking noise and my pc works completely fine as it should. thanks for your help

It is probably enough.

If you realllly want to know, look up your exact PSU stats, either online...or it they are written on the side of your PSU.

How many amps are there on each rail?

If this is greater than the max amps a 270 will pull... then the PSU is enough.

Anyway, it still sounds to me like the fan inside the PSU is making contact with something... is there anything dangling?

Could you remove the PSU and short the green and black wires to turn it on out of the case?

My system is pretty similar to yours
i5-4670k minor undervolt
GTX 670 2gb minor overclock
8gb ram
3TB internalHDD
256GB SSD
dvd-rw drive
2x80mm case fans
1x 140mm case fan

it uses the following
360W prime+furmark wall power
310W system power

as mentioned by threepwood, whether its a single 12V rail suppling the cpu and gpu will affect (if youve got 2x 225W 12v rails but your 670 and FX8320 both run off one of those rail its not gonna be too happy as theyll pull ~290W combined

if an overloaded double rail is not the case then the 8320 is a 125W cpu compared to my i5's 80w so a rough estimate for your system would be 355W system power, which is 80% capacity, which is fine imo as long as its not running there 24/7.

the fan making contact is the first thing id check for the clicking too, id expect the sound to be there all the time if thats the problem, itll just become more pronounced when it spins faster (ie when gaming)
