PSU faulty?

Okay so I bought a brand new CS650M Corsair PSU, along with a new graphics card, I decided to plug in the PSU first without the new GPU and thank god I did....

After I plugged in the new PSU, the system booted for literally 3 seconds, if that... and then turned off. There is no noises/beeps, nothing just normal startup, but then instant shutdown after 3 seconds. I unplugged all non-essential things and tried again... same result.

So I put everything back in and put back in my old PSU, and turnt it on, my CD burner pumped out smoke... I shut it all down and disconnected all non-essential things again... turned it back on, with my old PSU still and it all ran fine... no issues for the last hour. I plugged my other stuff in, graphics card, additional fans e.t.c and still fine no issues.

I feel that the PSU I bought was faulty and it caused something to snap inside the burner which then burnt out when I put my old/working PSU back in. Am I wrong? could there be something else at fault here? Keeping in mind my system is fine on this old PSU, just not the new one I bought... what should I do? is there a safe way to find out if the PSU is at fault? I did see that trick with the paper clip but that seems a little dangerous lol.

You can try the paper clip trick, it shouldn't be dangerous. I do not take any responsibility though :p Are you sure you connected everything properly i.e CPU plug and 24 pin motherboard plug?

So BEFORE you bought the new PSU there was no problems with CD burner?

Also can you list your full specs please.

Hiya I'm such an idiot. I spoke to someone that troubleshooted with me and even though my PSU is a modular one, you must use the cables they provided nothing else... Doesn't that defeat the purpose of it being modular? I thought the point of it being modular was that you can use whatever cables you need but take out the ones you don't so I disconnected the psu connectors from the psu itself and replaced it with the new one (using the same cables from old psu) as it seemed the easier approach than disconnecting all cables etc. I did not know that inside the cable the it can be wired differently so it basically wasn't outing power to the right pins on the devices thank god it didn't fry my HDds. And only the DVD drive which I never used anyway... So after putting the new cables in and removing all the old everything worked fine minus the DVD burner... :/ I can live with that.

I'll keep the post here because I hope it will help someone in my position in the future although I don't think anyone would be as clueless as me :(
