Hi there,

Can anyone recommend a PSU that would be ideal for running a three card Crossfire setup? Cards are 5850s so would use 200W max apiece and with another 200W for system, would 800W be enough or should I go higher for say a 900W or even a 1KW?

If you are using a similar setup, can you let me know what you use?

Many thanks for reading

Hi stulid,

Thanks for the information. Is it worthwhile getting say one of these: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-233-SV&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=

£10 more expensive, for more watts and an extra set 0f 6/8 pin for dare I say it possible quad crossfire? I know this one is Silver compared to the other Gold one.

I suppose it comes down to whether I wanna save power costs compared to spending upfront in cost. That's right isn't it?

A little test I did:

i7-2600K @ 4.6GHz
TriFire unlocked HD 6950 Sapphire TOXICs @ 980MHz/5400MHz

Prime95 running 8 threads, CPU @ 100% load
Furmark running all 3 GPU's @ 95%+ load

Maximum power draw from the mains 850W.

1250W Gold rated PSU, say 92% efficient.

Actual output from the PSU ~782W.

Essentially 3 overclocked HD 6970s and an overclocked i7-2600K all running at full pelt.

Your power draw will be lower unless overclocking, especially on the graphics cards.

An 800W PSU will do it as long as it's a quality unit with the full, or nearly full, 800W available on the 12V rail(s) and it has the required 6 PCI-E power connectors.

Both nice PSU's with good reviews to back them up.

Its as you say, save power costs vs more watts.
