Hey There,
I was hoping you could help. I've a new 7900gtx and am trying to work out if I need a new PSU.

right now I have a 400w Qtechnology one from quiet pc which I paid around £80 for a year ago.

I know my BFG 7900GTX needs 25A on the 12V rail and according to the specs my psu has a total combined +12v of 29A but it seems to be split between
+12V1 maximum output current 14A and
+12V2 maximum output current 15A

I don't pretend to understand all the voltage stuff, is that good enough?

Hey,
I have a p4 670 3.8, 4gig ddr dual memory, 2 sata hard drives 5 ide hard drives and an elite pro x-fi.

I know thats a ton to power and remarkably its all stable. I'm just trying to find out if my psu is holding the 7900gtx back. I switched it out for a cheapisj 550w which had more ampage on the 12v but everything was really unstable, x-fi crackled under load and hard drives wernt detected on boot up. So now im back with the 400w again and everythings back to normal. The fps in cs: source were the same with both (around 130fps) so maybe im cpu limited?

PSU doesn't make any difference to FPS, and to be honest with a system like that you should be running a good branded 500/600w PSU. I reccommend buying an OCZ Gamexstream 600w or similar specced PSU for a system like you have, 400w is stretching it a bit there.

I would concur - 500w quality psu bare minimum and I would actually tend to go for a 600w - 700w one for future expansion just in case.

if i was you go for the hipper type r it is 580 watt looks beautful has intelgient gfan control an monlex wires so the wires you do not need you can quickly and easily scew out trust me m8 you wound not regreat it ;)

Damn, read your post to late. Have ordered the OCZ Gamexstream 700w after the reccomendation above and reading all the great reviews on the site.

Wonder if i'll notice a difference in day to day useage? Talking to you guys and thinking about it it does seem like i've been pushing things :)

Not being funny mate - but you were only just the other day asking whether your rig in the sig was a bargain - ie trying to learn about newish items of hardware, and now you are presenting yourself as pretty experienced with psu's?

By all means say you have never had a problem with yours - but dont go potentially misleading others with experience you dont have

If I have misread your intentions I appologise

CMB - I think you will be very happy with your OCZ choice

There are better PSU's for not much more money than the hipers.
Don't rate them TBH style over content in my book. :p

Think you mentioned a competitor? I'd remove that link & seek FAQ if you wish your stay to be long (& peaceful) :)

That 400w's a good-type but not powerful enough for your rig. 700w in my opinion is OTT but future-proof (if you can use that term in the computer world) :D

Am looking forward to installing it. I've edited the above post - I just linked to the power supply and specs - I didn't even consider them to be a competitor.

Exact same PSU as I just bought and installed, great choice mate, very poswerful, stable, and so damn quiet. ;)

Ignore the Hiper 580w reccommendation, they ain't a patch on the OCZ in terms of quality or power output, totally different league. :)
