Ok so the dilemma is, I'm going to be upgrading my sons machine to a new 1080p monitor. But he only has a GTX260 in his machine, now I have my old GTX470 that I could put in there but his PSU is only a OCZ425w I believe, which I'm sure wouldn't be up to the job.
So do I get him a new PSU costing about £60 or a another card which would be have to be in the £80+ bracket to make it worth while I think.

Suggestion's please.

Rest of his machine is a I3 3220 on a z68 board with 8GB ram, GTX260, 240GB SSD currently a 17" 4.3 1280*1024 monitor

The 470 will struggle to play all modern titles at 1080p, unless you turn the details down. 720p is definitely possible.

However, I would argue that a new PSU would run you £60. The Corsair CX500 is more than capable of powering a 470, and it only costs £41.

Turning a few details down isn't a problem for him,(bear in mind he is using a GTX260 at the moment).
Having used the 470 for 2 years clocked at 800MHz I would certainly not want to take a chance on only a 500w PSU as these things can be a bit power hungry when being pushed.

Not sure where you are getting the £41 for a Corsair CX500 from.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 500w Modular '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020059-UK) £55.99

Have you tried running a power meter to the wall, to see how much your system (with a 470) is actually consuming ? Total system draw should not be more than 400W. That would be around 80% of a 500W PSU's capacity.

I did a random search on Google shopping for the PSU's price. The one you were showing me is the modular version of the CX500. I was referring to the non-modular one.

You can't get a 750 TI for £80. Maybe a 260X or something second hand from AMD's 78xx series.

As I Edited in my previous post, he can get one for £80 from the Members Market at the moment.
