PSU for crossfire 6950s

Your existing PSU probably has enough wattage but only 2 PCI-E power connectors so you'd have to make up 2 more using molex adapters.

The PSU you've linked to is ample and offers benefits such as Gold rating and is modular like your current PSU. It will comfortably run HD 6950 Crossfire.

There are other PSU's which will do the job for less money so it depends if you want to spend the £100.

I've currently running two 5850s using molex adaptors so do you think I should be OK for two 6950s? I've done some google searches and a lot of people are saying you need a 750Watt PSU

If you're running 2 HD 5850's without problems then I'd say you can run 2 HD 6950's.

The power consumption of the HD 6950 Twin FrozR III is similar to a HD 5850.

Cool. If however my Corsair 620HX struggles, how will I know? Will it make loads of noise and generate a lot more heat? Or will I see artifacting in games due to the 6950s not getting enough power?

A lack of power can lead to:

  • bad 3D performance
  • crashing games
  • spontaneous reset or imminent shutdown of the PC
  • freezing during gameplay
  • PSU overload can cause it to break down
If the fan on your PSU speeds up generating because it's more heat that means it's working harder but not necessarily that anything is wrong.

Look out for the symptoms above which I'm sure you'd soon notice.

I'm going to say what I always say. Get the best PSU you can afford :)

Saves you continuously upgrading it :)

Your current PSU is fine but I would invest in a new one whist your current one holds more value

That's just me though

You read my mind! The Corsair AX850 looks nice but its too pricey for my budget. I have around £100 to spend on a PSU.

If you're going to spend the money then get the one you linked in your first post.

It's the best you'll get for £100 and should see you through an upgrade or two.

I am running 2 unlocked and overclocked 6950 with a Seasonic X-650 and never had a problem. To be honest, I think 750w is plenty for your needs but buy the best PSU you can get for the money. In fact I would get the best quality PSU for the money, not the highest wattage.
