I'm specing a high end video/photo editing software PC.

But i'm stuck on what PSU for the skulltrail? Will a 800watt cover it? It will only be using 1 CPU to start off with. And a nVidia Quattro GFX card with 4gb ram (going to 8 in future) 4x1tb HDDs, xFi Fatality.

I'm not using a top end quattro as i don't need rending speed. So GFX isn't a problem for the CPU.

I have read that a 600watt will cover 1 cpu with a 8800gt/gts.

So i'm thinking a decent 800 to keep it safe?

**BTW don't give me all the comments about its a waste of money.**

Tbh mate I'd go for at least 1000W with a skulltrail. Assuming the only reason you'd want one would to put in a second CPU, coupled with all your other stuff will consume some pretty immense power.

400W will easily cover a single CPU and a 8800GTS, higher ratings are largely to cover Nvidia should someone use a "budget" PSU that doesnt actually meet its rated power output.

An extra 100-125W will more than cover a second CPU in a skulltrail setup, a 600 PSU from Seasonic/Corsair/Tagan for example should have no problem, assuming the Quattro is comparible in power requirements to the 8800GTS.

800W is probably overkill, but PSU's do degrade slowely overtime, so a bit of overkill isnt necessarily a bad thing if you can afford it. To be honest though, I'd probably just go for a 600W for dual quad + single GPU.

its not jsut about the power you need a PSU with enough power connections

2 8pin CPU connectors for a start.

I run an Enermax Galaxy 1000w in my skulltrail setup

2 8pin CPU connectors for a start.

Very good point. I always try to avoid using adaptors and splitters, as they introduce all sorts of problems. A modular PSU could still offer more CPU connectors (at the expense of the second PCIe power connector for example) and still be a good PSU for a Skulltrail. But it would depend what cables were supplied with the PSU.

The wattage may well be overkill, but if thats required to find a PSU with sufficient connectors so be it :)

agreed my system and monitor are currently drawing 427w from my mains socket.

1kw is way overkill but it is a stable PSU has a high efficiency and has all the connectors you will ever need.

I have used it in the last 2 rigs ive had aswell.

then why are you buying a skulltrail mobo ?

if you ever add a new CPU you will need a new power supply.

seems like a waste of time and money.

Do it once do it right ?

There are reasons - And might come across stupid. But i don't really care of peoples feelings.

Just need to know hwat i can get away with, I've ordered a 750watt anyhow :)

then why ask on a forum lol.

the D5400XS is a gaming board there are also better boards for what you want.

all i read is that your trying to do something cheap that isn't designed to be cheap.

I ask on a forum for what i should be looking at for it.

I'm not doing something cheap. This is about £1500 of editing PC, with about £3k of software...

We want something readily available and expandable. Ram and CPU we already have from servers. So its only the mobo really.

Just because you have one doesn't mean you know what everyone will use this board for.

its the fact your buying a dual CPU board and buying a PSU without enough power conenctors for DUAL CPU's. It's only a waste of money as you will probably have to upgrade your PSU when you decide to add another CPU. May as well have gone for a PSU that can power it all in the first place.

make sure the ram you have will work.

Dont think just because you have FB Dimms from servers they will work. I know this because i thought the same thing.

I wanted to use 667mhz FBdimms from a HP DL360 G5. It didnt work in the end i used kingstons memory configurator and found the correct memory for my skulltrail board.

If you are also not using the Extreme CPU's then you will know that not all Xeon's will work in this motherboard ! Intel wont even publish a list of ones that do other than the few stupidly expensive ones.
