p4 asus mobo-p4intel 2.8mhz cup.

ina rush put ermax psu with switch in the On position, fitted power lead to wall socket and went to turn on switch on wall socket, as i did i heard a small bang from back of pc and a small amount of smoke comming
from where psu is.

removed old psu , at least 5 years old.

bought a "x-power gtx light 580 w psu, with only 2 old style molex connectors but it has the a required p4 connecter for my intel p4 2.8 cpu.

connected it up with and no sign of life,
well it just lights up mobo light.

for a nano sec it spins up cpu fan and then dies.
is my mobo dead ?
have igot the wrong type of psu- new one has not got all 20 pins on main socket but i think it has 20 leads.

enermax465AX-was my oldpsu.
Enermax EG 465AX-VE

465ax -ve = now dead.

please advise.

cannotstandusing my old win 98
pc that cannot be updated via win ms updates ect.

if your motherboard has 24 pin connection and your PSU only has 20 then it isn't going to give your motherboard enough power. That sounds like the issue to me.
You'll need to get another power supply though you can get 20 to 24 pin adapters, im not sure i would trust them.
something like this should do you: Gigabyte 460 Watt

the main power block from mobo connector power- does indeed have a 20 pin block, same as old ernermax psu,but new psu has a silver sleeve missing in 1 of the connectors and one of the other has two leads going into one of the block- making a sum of 20 wires...plus the p4 power connector.
tbh this 2-1 is quite odd.

i will take new psu back to where i bought from.

as mobo light does come on, then do you reckon that mobo is not fried ?

check back later this afternoon- thanks for your reply.

Not necessarily on this last question re the light. My first enermax galaxy fried two mobos and in both cases the lights still came on even though they were dead. Although the light was on, that was it no POST, no fans starting up etc.

RMA'd PSU and Enermax also replaced mobo for me (after much messing)

When enermax inspected the PSU they found one of the internal wires was punctured by something in the PSU case!

rang up ernermax, said pro 82 385 watt should be ok to buy, said do ocuk sell it, said yes-rang up ocuk, they said they do not not sell the type
of psu that i need= ie. 1.3.

please advise.

using thenew psu as above- cpu fan came on breifly .

If Enermax find fault they will likely replace your mobo - I dealt with a guy called Alan at Enermax who was helpful. Their head office in Asia made life as difficult as possible for me though but he got there in the end.

Of course quicker but less honest to RMA both separately
