PSU/GFX Card replacement

I think my graphics card and/or PSU are dying.

It's been happening for some time, but 9/10 times my Windows XP boot screen will be corrupted, completely grey with horizontal stripes. Other than that my PC has worked totally flawlessly. After reading some other threads, it seems this is a bad sign for my card.

Now, after some powercuts, I've had a couple of random PC resets and this has convinced me to get a new PSU sooner rather than later (I've heard generally bad things about Hiper, no specifics, just that they aren't very popular, so this was already on the cards.)

Now the questions:

1) I'm looking at the 8800GT, but I'm going to build a backup shuttle PC in May-ish, which this card is ultimately destined for (depending on the impending 9800's). I'm looking for something that is fairly quiet, would anyone recommend a particular make of card, or go for the cheapest and get an aftermarket kit?

1a) I am nVidia's biotch, how are the ATI cards looking from a performance/power usage perspective?

2) I'm looking at the Coolermaster Real Power 520W, is the Motherboard cable long enough to reach in a P180 case?

2a) Is the 520W enough, or should I go for the 600W or bigger? bearing in mind that I'm holding out hope for the 9800 series

2b) Would anyone reccommend any other makes, my only requirement that it is modular.

Thanks in advance

520W will easily be enough for what youve specified. I have a 520w cprsair and it happily ran an overclocked Q6600, an 8800GTX, 4Gb RAM and 2 HDDS and 2 opticals

Not sure about the cable length tho

i think the problem could be you have been on the recieving end off power surges ... or at least thats what it sounds like it could be according to your explaination.

as for recommendations ill get back to you on that one.

Now that you mention it, decto. I do recall seeing a lot of corsair PSU's in build pictures on here.

That in itself is a pretty good indicator to me. I've looked for cable lengths on the corsair website, and it gives lengths for all the cables except the 24pin main power connector. Looks like a a'googling I will go.

Hmm, well my 24 pin plugs in easily about 2/3 of the way up the board.... and from the slack I'd say it would plug into the drive bay edge of the board anywhere right up to the top.

24 pin connectors on the top edge are a no go since the cable wouldn't go through the HSF

I've done some googling and still haven't turned up any specifics on cable length, 20-24" was the best I could get.
However, I found some pictures posted on another forum of the corsair 520W in a P180, I've checked my own motherboard, and should have no problem whatsoever.

Another bonus being that it looks like I can put the PSU/HDD compartment fan back in, as the PSU connectors on my hiper were interfering.

I'm probably going to go for the 620W for the extra oomph and the extra SATA connections. For the Gfx card stuff I'll post my questions in the appropriate forum.

Thanks a lot guys, OCUK get another sale based on the strength of their community.
