Okay so ive been hearing what sounds like a strange whining noise from my ezcool 500w psu and ive had it for a while now.

what would be a good choice to replace incase or if it could go bust ?

been looking at the ocuk huntkey line of psus.

any others recommended and what wattage would be sufficient. My pc specs in sig. other than that all i have is one hdd and 2 dvd drives and a floppy. and some cathodes and fans.

seem to have good reviews and arent to pricey

looking also at the Hiper and OCZ psus and the corsair ones

The huntkey uses a yate loon fan (the one seasonic used before they switched to adda due to quality control reasons). When seasonic used the yate loon they produced the quietest non-passive PSU that I know of. I was interested in the huntkey (the 140mm fan one) for this reason and what little I could find on them looked good. In the end i went with a semi-passive PSU though

The earthwatts that is linked is a good one, or the corsair 450w. It's likely that your "500w" is more like a 330w as i googled the brand and only came up with a 550w ezcool with a 24A 12v rail- the corsair 450w has 33A on its 12v rail, which is the most important one.

Have they reviewed the 650W Dark Power? There was a round up in Anandtech not long ago and they said it was the quietest.

It was the 430w version but they reccomend the whole of the seasonic s12, one seasonic m12 (and by implication all the m12 mk2s) the actec neo and the corsair HX and VX ahead of the darkpower in the same power bracket.

True fact, but you mention Antec Neo and Corsair being quieter and they are not, as you can see in that review :)
It doesnt go above 21db.

Anyway for the OP ... I think it all depends if you want modular or not.

well should be stable by all means with my system and should allow me to get a 8800gt (or similar) which i will get sooner rather than later.

preferably a modular psu as the idea sounds interesting.

well anywhere between £40 and probably £70. looking for a decent psu manufactor with enough watts/amps on 12vrail/power/juice to suit a 8800gt and the rest of my pc.
