PSU gone?

So last night I shut down my PC as normal and came back to it to find fans still running but everything else off and the HDD activity LED solid red.

I switched it off manually, now it won't turn back on.

This morning I have tried with a different PSU, although only 250W and it powers up but then immediately fans turn about 1/4 rotation and it switches off. (All other cards etc unplugged, just CPU, mobo, ram). With the 250W PSU the mobo LED stays on, with the original PSU there is no light.

Perhaps there isn't enough power from the 250W PSU so it switches off? (Only running a P5B-E, E6300, and 5GB ram)

The original PSU, also will not jump start.

My guess is your right, your current PSU is dead, and I would be surprised if the 250W could power it properly, although if you don't have any gfx card plugged in, that could also cause it not to boot, but seeing as your 250W gets further than your main PSU, I would say it's dead.

Cheers. Let's hope it didn't take anything else with it :(

Going to borrow a mate's 460W PSU later I think.

Best thing to do if you can, then at least you'll know if everything else is still working fine. What PSU was it you had originally? If it was a decent one, the rest of your stuff will probably be fine, but that's less likely if it was a cheap, unbranded PSU (although, I've had a few cheap PSUs blow on me in the past, and none of them took anything with it, but I was rather lucky with that)

It was a Tagan 580W Modular PSU, cost about £80 at the time so I hope everything is okay.

Right. Same issue with the 460W PSU, just powers up for one second..

Is this indicating that perhaps the motherboard has gone too?

Is the 4 or 8 pin CPU power connector firmly connected?

It wasn't, but I realised and tried with it:
Only got the CPU fan going very slowly round, almost pulsing round not a smooth motion.

Now I have just tried with the original CPU fan/heatsink and my graphics card etc plugged in, it powers up for about 10 seconds but no output on screen.

Well, seems like the PSU might have caused other problems. How much of the rest of the system would you be able to test in another PC? Would be easiest to check the RAM next, then if you have another mobo/cpu that are compatible, try though, hopefully it'll let you narrow down what else is wrong.

Also, that 460W PSU is definitely working, right?

Yeah the PSU was pulled out a working system.

I've tried the graphics card in another PC and it is working fine, didn't consider the RAM possibly being faulty. Will have to give that a test tomorrow.

This is going to be expensive :(

Only suggesting the RAM because it doesn't require you to pull the HSF off to change the CPU, my guess is it's more likely to be the mobo though.
Seems like it.

Anyone have any suggestions for a good PSU? Replacing 580W Tagan modular PSU. Don't really want to spend more than £50.

Personally I've always been a fan of Corsair PSUs, however they're not cheap, for the higher end ones anyway. Someone else is probably better off recommending you a different one, as I'm not too familiar with other manufacturers, however, if memory serves, XFX, and Antec are meant to make good ones I think.

How are Be Quiet for reliability, never actually heard of them before.

Also, modular is surprisingly not as standard as I expected considering I bought mine 4 years ago.

+1 on the corsair psu.

I have had mine for a couple of years now and it been superb. Like Mr Anderson has mentioned they are a bit more expensive but got the quality to back it up which does help with confidence imo.
