PSU Help please for Asus x299a

Hi

Pretty sure our PSU has given up the ghost (overheated) and not registering at all when switched on. Checked the mains cable and all the usual suspects.
What type of PSU do I need please as I seem to be struggling. I understand I need one with 2 x 8-pin EPS connectors and most Im finding have 1. I have no idea what "form factor" I should be ;looking at ATX or other?
Im looking at either a corsair 650 or 750w. But open to others (this is an 8 year old pc we use for working from home).

Hardware inside Nvidia 1050ti, 5 hard drives and 3 case fans, 1 internal floppy connector for a texas instruments pcie firewire card.
Normally no more than 4 usb sockets used simulatneously

Any help much appreciated as I need to try and sort over next 24 hours as use for work.

Assuming this is just a standard PC that you built yourself (i.e. not a Dell or something), then you just want an ATX PSU. SFX/TFX are for compact systems and you'd probably know if you have one.

In so far as, ATX 2.x, 3.x, any should work, but I'd advise for an old PC that you choose a PSU which still has the -12v line.

OCUK currently have an older model PSU in stock: Phanteks AMP 650. A bit pricey, but is a good PSU, derived from the Seasonic GX.

If you plan to upgrade the graphics card in future, then an ATX 3.x model is advisable, so long as it doesn't ditch the -12v line.

Yes its a 3rd party build non dell standard atx im guessing. I just couldnt see anything thay had the 2 x 8pins, but if thats standard then Im hoping to try a 50 quid psu for now. Only temporary till we sort out budget for new rig. Thank you.

Personally, I would not recommend buying a cheap temporary PSU like this, when you can spend a little more on something that will last you through multiple rigs and be suitable for a modern build.

Some of Corsair's older low-end models are also very poor PSUs that I wouldn't want to use.

Sooo, some overly complicated googling (based on the UPC) arrived at a Corsair model number, which took me to Corsair's website and the good news is that it does have the -12v line, the bad news is that it only has 1x EPS12v 8-pin.

But, this is a model that Corsair had multiple variants, so I don't know how reliable that info is.

Most boards will run just fine with only a single 8 pin though, so it'd probably work.

in terms of: how good is it? There are a lot of CX PSUs and I'm not sure exactly which one this is. SPL's tier list puts them anywhere from B (pretty good) to E (garbage tier).

Ok on the new psu corsair looks good. However there is 1 8 pin labelled cpu and 1 8pin with nought on it. So im going to take a punt and see how it goes. Although IT May NOT BE THE PSU but i pulled the old psu out and powered on not a purr and I would imagine at least a hum couod be present.

Ok so all setup.
Wont power on.
Can see the mobo power button is read, holdong it for short or long doesnt change anything.
Added a vid sorry for noise in background and state of the kit

I can see the power button runs into the power button.
There are 2 x 8 cpu on one lead but I can only and as far as I recall only removed 1 x 8 connector.
Any thoughts or any glaring standing out here please?

Can you say that again? Don't know what you mean.

From the model I found on the Corsair website, it only had one connector and one cable, are you absolutely sure that you're using the correct cable?

So on the PSU theres 1 cable with 2 8 pin sockets with 1 socket only having cpu on it. These are hard wired ibto the psu and not modular.
So only 1 of the 8 pin sockets is utilised as far as I can see on the motherboard in socket 4 ATX12_1 socket - now I dont recall (I know Im silly) if I pulled out a 4 pin connector in neighbouring socklet 7 ATX12_2 socket. Ive checked the leads from the seasonic that I removed and cant see one.
The website is incorrect as far as the PSU I received.

The 2x 8 pin molex's are in a daisy chain - 1 molex has CPU writtern on it and the second (the end terminator) 8 pin molex has nothing written on it.
the 4 pin molex connects to a female 4 pin which feeds to the front of the FRactal case for the power swicth, 3 case fans. Ive checked the 3 header molex connectors are connecter 1 x audio 1 x power 1 x usb/

So I am seeing the red power button mounted on the mobo 19 is lit red.
No fans or power lights.
No error codes.
Mobo socket U31G1_34 is connected to the front fractal case panel which aligns for the USB connectors.
Ive disconnected the 4 hard drives for now leaving only the os SSD nvme hard drive in situ.
Ive rechecked all connectors that I can see and nothing appears loose or in line.

It seems odd that power is now going in but no boot up with the power switch not reacting.

Normally, you only need a single 8 pin EPS12v plugged in and other connectors are optional.

But, if a 4 pin ATX12v is required, you can usually make one by splitting off 4 pins from one of the 8 pin EPS12v connectors. Since, they're actually 4+4 where you can clip off/slide off half of them.

Not all 8 pins will split in this way, but I'd be very surprised if at least one of the two connectors that you have doesn't split.

If the parts were functional, I'd assume there's an issue with the power connectors, or the power button.

If everything is plugged in correctly, then I'd expect the PC to at least boot to a blank screen.

Do you have the label of the PSU, so you can check it has a -12v line?

Is it possible that the PSU took out the motherboard when it went, or there was another issue?

Thank you - yes Im at the same conclusion - mobo gone potentially cpu.
Im thining new mobo and cpu but not looked yet as liked to keep what components I can rescue. Saying that I think its going to be cheaper to get a new low spec rig as this is going to my 12 year old since replaced recently with a 9950x3d setup.
I dont really have time to mess around the components so will strip it and rag it out on ebay see what happens.

Checked the psu only has 2 8 molexs neither split to 4.

You know Ive just checked the modula leads from the seasonic.. The PSUs not suitable for this mobo I can see 2 x 2 4 pins and can see 1 was an 8 and the other a 4 as the second 4 pin on the second psu lead is bent at 90 degrees. So thats my error and potential saviour.
Need to dig around for another psu on amazon to try. Im feeling positive haha...

As a courtesy addum - im tempted on the Phanteks AMP 650 - it looks exactly like what I need so I think ill take a final punt on it. If I cant get a refund then that's fine, no different than paying an engineer for time in troubleshooting and then repairing. FInger crossed. Failing that next step new pc for the lucky lad!!!!

That's not normally the case, the additional 4 or 8 pin is optional for the majority of boards, but this board is rather old, so you never know...

Is there any sign of discoloration/burns anywhere, especially around the CPU/VRM or the power plugs?

Saying that I think its going to be cheaper to get a new low spec rig as this is going to my 12 year old since replaced recently with a 9950x3d setup.

On the plus side, if you do need to replace the system, a cheapo H610+12100F combination can match or beat most of these old CPUs in games and general usage. Admittedly a 16 core CPU will smash it in multicore.

Sure, I'm afraid that website aren't the best for PSUs and Phanteks aren't widely sold in the UK.

It is a good PSU, so you could use it for a future build if needed and maybe return the Corsair instead.

Yes i checked around for burn marks scorches and the like.
Its been in our new extension for theblast week and temperatures were high. Im actually hopeful iys the psu, appreciate itt could be any component in the chain but ill let you know.
