Hello

Last night at around 3am, I was woken up when i suddenly heard and saw my computer power up and then switch itself off a few seconds later. I was rather confused by this as it had been properly shut down the night before. I got up and turned off the wall outlet to prevent it doing this again for the rest of the night.

This morning, I turn the power outlet swicth back on and press the pc on button, it fails to turn on.

I can hear and extremely high pitch constant sound coming from the PSU and when i switch the psu off, the constant sound changes in frequency as it looses power and then is not heard. as soon asi turn the psu back on however, the noise returns.

I tried removing the main power plug from the mobo and using the paperclip trcik connected to a green and any black socket on that plug to see if the PSU would hop into action whcih it won;t.

Any ideas?

Is the psu dead? How do you think this could ahve been caused? and what PSU would you reccomend to replace it?

the system is :

Asus P5W DH Deluxe
Intel Q6600 at stock.
WD Raptor X 150gb
WD 500gb drive
4gb OCZ ram.
Corsair Hiper modular 530w
watercooling loop
ati x700 pro gpu
asus ati eah3650 gpu

The system is being upgraded shortly in the new year anyway so if the psu does need upgrading, it will need to support an i7 950

Please give me any replies asap so if needed i can order a new psu for delivery tommorow.

Thanks

Neil

If your sure its the PSU making the noises then its probably that. Only noise from PSU should be the fan. Just out of curiosity, is the PSU producing weird smells?

To your question about what PSU is needed for your new system. What will be the specs, sli/crossfire? Im not an expert on PSU's but i would recommend 600w+. Most Gpus these days ask for 500w+ so to be safe get slightly higher. If your using sli/crossfire i would bump it up to 750w+.

If your wanting to buy a new PSU, i recommend getting one that can power both the systems. try the Corsair TX series, 650w/750w

Is it a Corsair or a Hiper PSU? If its the later they are no longer in business, if it is the former there is a chance the PSU might still be in warranty.

If you need a PSU, the best offer you can have at the moment is the following

Antec True Power 650W

5 year warranty, Seasonic-based platform and 80 Plus bronze

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-117-AN&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1088

They can be found cheaper elsewhere though.

With that you will be able to run almost any single-gpu system and any dual-gpu up to dual 460 GTXs or 6870 xfired.

The ting is that I am 80% the high pitched noise is coming from the psu.

Iahve unplugged all the modular extensions from the psu and the only cable protruding from it is the main large atx plug whcih is unplugged and got the paperclip trick paperclip in the end. I turned the psu on and i get the noise so i do think it is the psu

Sorry, it's a Hiper, ithough Hiper was a corsair model. Sorrry there. It's deffo a 530w hiper

If it's the case that everything is unplugged except the PSU - then you can be 100% sure.

and to the first reply about any smells coming from it.

I have no idea as i have a cold at the moment and can't smell anything myself! :-)

Only asked this because in my lifetime I've had 2 psu's die on me, the first signs of this was a strange burning smell coming out the back of the case.

Components die mate of old age. You must have had that PSU for at least 3 or 4 years. It was time for a new one! :)

TruePower New is good choise, quality platform and more importantly for longer term reliability also quality capacitors.

Components die mate of old age.
Wrong, malfunctioning is completely normal state for substandard cheap Chinese capacitors used by junk brands/makers... and that's not only thing which is substandard in Hiper-explosives.

On a similar note, my Hiper PSU went last night. I knew it was coming and had planned to stick a new one on my Christmas list.. guess I'll just have to fork out for one instead.

The light on the back is lit, but there's nobody home when I try turn it on. I'm just hoping that it didn't take anything else with it at the same time as I've only recently upgraded.

That was actually the second one I had following a replacement from them. Originally the larger fan stopped spinning and it was overheating. I noticed the same issue about a month ago but with the fan on the back being somewhat weak/stopping occasionally.

By the sounds of it, if you've been running one of these for a length of time I would seriously think about swapping it out.

Just my 2p.

This Antec one I have just fitted, is also lighting up my cathode tubes much brighter too whcih is good. Maybe the Hiper 530w just didn't provide enough power.

The Hiper one still had the light on the back working like yours but produced a very high pitched noise when switched on.

Thanks Again guys.
