I have just purchased a HTPC and the PSU is loud.

The PSU is located at the front of the case and is giving out a lot of heat, the case is very worm.

I want to replace the PSU with a a good quality one but I want one that gives me as little noise as poss and also low heat output?

I wont be running a super PC so does not have to be super powerfull.

Will be running the following

1 x 500gb sata HD
1 x Q6600
1 x ROM
1 x ATI 2400 pro
2 x 2gb 800mhz ram

Will be looking to add a second hard drive and also up the graphics card in 12 months time for a second hand 4780 approx level card.

So need to have a little head room. I dont know a great deal about the PSU but my main concern is noise & heat....

Any suggestions please?

No idea what the PSU is, its in a Opera case with the psu that came with it?

I know the case is a cheap one but was more concerned with the bits inside then the case.

According to the info its a winpower 500w PSU if that means anything?

no, the reason i asked is that not all htpc cases are standard ATX formats. if it isnt then an ATX psu wouldnt fit. Thats why i asked you what case it was, just incase you didnt know what a standard atx psu is :)

the opera case is made by a company called eye-T, i believe. its as standard ATX psu so thats good.

without a budget id recommend the seasonic silverpower 400w @ £46. it might seem a bit expensive considering the case costs less than that and comes with a 500w psu, but you need to understand the psu that came with that case will not be anywhere near as powerful as its rating would suggest.

Thanks for the reply James,

I was hoping to get good quality bits in the main build (performance)then upgrade when I could afford it.

My knowledge is very poor when it comes to PSU`s

The seasonic silverpower 400w I know is a good make from what the people on the forums say. What would I expect for noise levels and heat output.

The heat output is not the main thing but as you will know I should be able to get a good clock speed out of my Q6600 if wanted but the heat is a big problem with the cheap PSU.

The main thing for the noise levels is due to the unit been in my living room.

I dont mind spending a bit more but would not want to go above £55 so is there anything better ( noise, heat)?

Also would it make a difference the PSU is located at the front? would this cause problems with wiring and power input to the PSU?
