Just wondering what wattage PSU i would need for this build?

Krypton Z68 600i Intel Core i5 2500K 3.30GHz @ 4.60GHz Overclocked Bundle

Intel 520 Series 240GB 2.5" SATA-3 Solid State Hard Drive - Retail

EVGA GeForce GTX 460 Superclocked *** 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Asus PA238Q 23" Professional ProArt Widescreen P-IPS LCD Monitor

and obviously a cheap optical drive

I was thinking Corsair AX650 and could upgrade again later on if i go SLI or Ivybridge or should i go AX1200 and will never need to upgrade unless it breaks?

Cheers

An AX650W is a good choice for that system - as it is very efficient, fully modular, extremely good quality, long warranty and will happily run two GTX 460 cards in SLI.

Though you may want to consider going for the AX750 - just so you can be assured it will run any future single GPU card with room to spare.

Though I wouldn't go as high as a AX1200 unless you really plan to make use of it. Not only is it very expensive, but at low PSU load levels (pretty much any load level with the current rig) the efficiency won't be nearly as good as a smaller unit - due to the PSU efficiency peaking at 50-60% total capacity (and falling off quite a bit at low load).

Some people forget how much power a system can draw whilst in use, and some use Triple or quad gpus and and multiple CPU'S.

My system in my sig pulls around 430w at full load ~

Why do people go with 1000/1200W so? Is it when running quad 580's that you would need it??

More or less yes, lots of gpus and massive overclocks etc.. I'm running an i7 920 @ 4Ghz with 12GB RAM and HD6570 on a 300w SFF psu in a low profile HTPC rig.. hasn't blown up yet in over a year :D

All good choices. However if you were tempted to spend around £245 on an AX 1250, then maybe you could consider spending that extra on your Graphics card. This would give you a better performance bang for your buck if you are gaming.

Check out the Video Cards Links and the anandtech comparisons links and choose whatever you feel most comfortable with.

lets hope u didnt curse your self with that comment :p

Nah worked out the psu requirements at worst case is 270w (it only has an SSD and BD-ROM and the 12v rail on the psu exceeded the max draw of the components. Always on 1.3v as theres no offset option but speedstep does clock it down to 1.6Ghz, its a decent Seasonic 300w so theres no danger :)
