i am buying a new pci-e graphics card and my pc only came with a 300w psu
and the card i need says to have a 450w psu are they expensive cause ive seen ones that are £20-£30 and some like £70 will a cheaper one do cause im on a really tight budget :(

even though you are on a tight budget do NOT get a cheap power supply
Akasa Ultra Quiet 460W Paxpower Active PFC ATX2.0 PSU - Black Nickel (CA-003-AK)
this one would do you nicely i think its obviously sold here and not for a bad price either, i seriously dont recommend you go cheaper
have fun

I've not got much experience with PSUs as i've only got a generic unbranded 550W one, as for Q-Tec i know it's a really cheap 650W one, but im not sure how good it is, if you are on a really tight budget then maybe go for it? maybe others will be able to help you out more, as PSUs (good ones anyway, tend to start at around £40-£50

You pays your money you takes your choice, personally i NEVER cut corners where psu's are concerned you save maybe £10-15 but if it dies it could well take other things with it and cost hundreds of ££ to replace everything that goes.

Personally i would recommend something like a Tagan 420 watt. It might be a tad lower than the one they recommend but it will be fine, i know people running pretty high spec machines on them (939 opterons multi drives and 850xt's for example) so depending on your full spec i would expect it to be ok.

a general rule is £50 and you can really go wrong. My mate recently bought the enermax noisetaker 535w. A little over @ £64, but its a lovely psu. Its very quiet ( i was worried what with it having an 80 and a 92mm fan) and cool. the only criticizm is the wiring. soo many wires and it its not modular - where you can disconnect the wires you arent using, which is vry handy tbh.

anyway as i said, £50 or more and you cant go wrong:)

You will initally save money, but if/when that POS QTEC blows up and takes several hundred pounds worth of gear YOU WILL kick yourself for not buying a good PSU in the first place.

ie model car- £15 for a failsafe, in a £1000 large scale car. "don't want to spend a extra £15" oops radio reception is lost and totally smashed chassis, pipe, front end, servos, and engine, receiver causing £500 worth of damage. New car and radio gear time. Plus you will still need a failsafe. I learnt from this mistake.

Model helicopter- use cheap blue bird servos which strip, and totals £1000 plus any damage to property .
Not worth it. What's £50 for a good quality PSU compared to the rest of the system? 10%?

no and no. spend the money mate. even if it means getting a 400w or a 450w for more £££ than those cheap psu's, you get what you pay for like Zefan said

Anything not for sale on this site is almost certainly a pile of crap. Just stay away from the q-tec section on here and you should be ok.

Hiper HPU-4M580 Type R 580W ATX2.2 PSU - Black (CA-009-HP)

That's the best you'll get for the money on here - its on special offer at the minute.

Oh or the Akasa as has been mentioned.

Just buy the.....

Akasa Ultra Quiet 460W Paxpower Active PFC ATX2.0 PSU - Black Nickel with Blue LED Fan (CA-004-AK)

Link

Look in my sig and you'll see what it powers!

Those are secondary details, i.e. important but don't matter as much as the AMPS, the +12v being the most important (good psu = 18A and above) :)

Good thread i will bear this in mind when i upgrade :D

Is there really a 'best' PSU supplier - what do most people use ?

Q-tec suck, Magna suck, EYE-T Suck as do EZcool. You will be wasting your money.

Get the Hyper 580w or the Akasa 460w, both are far better. To put it in perspective my 430w Seasonic that cost me £41 (bargain) can run a heavily overclocked pentium D, overclocked grapics, 4 case fans etc. whereas a £15 no name 480w one just died trying to run it with less fans and a lower OC, was louder, had less protection for the components if it did blow and looked crap.

Seasonic
PCP&C (Loud but very good)
Enermax
Antec

it changes with the wind, but tagen, enermax, antec, x-pro, sparkle, hiper and akasa are all great.

not to mention PC&C, but they are pretty hard core and expansive as a result.
