PSU Issues?

Hi all,

I built my computer 3 years ago, 3570k 670sli with a Seasonic 750w X-series PSU, as they are meant to be very reliable.

A few weeks ago I started having problems turning on my computer- initially I put this down to the power button on the case (FT02)- it was quite old and could stick a bit, but I could turn the computer on fine using the motherboard and a screwdriver to go across the power pins on the front panel connector.

However, this approach then failed. I decided to move the whole thing into a different case (Corsair C70) and it started fine, at least the first time. Since then, it has been having exactly the same issue, if not getting worse. Going across the pins also doesn't work.

Most of the time, when I press the power button nothing happens. However, sometimes the computer will apparently randomly start up quite some duration after pressing the button- it could be hours after I last pressed it.

I dealt with this for a while by simply not shutting down. However, whilst browsing the internet yesterday (nothing power intensive like gaming, it's been fine doing that), it randomly shut down- now blue screen or crash, as if the switch had just been turned off- this really made me think of a PSU fault.

I tried turning it on a again many times but no response, just as before when I started having this problem. This morning though, I flicked the switch on the PSU to off and pressed the power button a few times, then put the switch back to on and the computer started without me pressing the power button?

Any ideas as to what this could be? I'm assuming a PSU issue but really I'm quite confused by it all, especially the delayed turning on and the fact that when it's on it's been fine for gaming etc, until that time yesterday.

Cheers

tl;dr- Computer doesn't turn on with power button or via mobo. Sometimes apparently randomly turns on hours after pressing button. Has turned off once randomly as if turning off power.

Is the CPU overclocked?

Do you have another PSU you could use to test the system?

Also try removing the GPUs and using the onboard video, to see if the system starts then.

Yes the CPU is overclocked.

No I don't have a spare PSU, it's the only desktop I have.

I shall try that next time it powers off- do you think it could be due to too much power draw?

It's a possibility, shouldn't be though but no harm in finding out ;)

We can then get closer to determining what is at fault. What motherboard do you have?

Gigabyte Z77x-d3h

I'm running a very modest overclock, around 4.3GHz so nothing crazy at all. The thing about power is that it didn't crash when gaming or stress testing, so I don't know why it did
