hey guys am 'jump starting' my power supply (paper clip in green and black wire sockets on the ATX fitting) (corsair 650w) but keeps making a 'ticking' sound, but when i connect it to the mobo, its perfectly silent. is this 'ticking' sound whilst on 'jump start' a common thing?

I really dont know anything about this aside from using it as a crude way to check your psu is alive but i would imagine its along the lines of

"If I stick a screwdriver into a wallsocket it makes a "fitz bang" sound is this normal?"

lol. I can imagine the paperclip isnt doing you any favours lol

I'd guess its because you haven't got any load on it when you jumpstart it.
A lot of powersupplies need some sort of a load on them to actually work properly- If you've got a molex- fan connector or a couple of cathodes I'd plug them in and see if it stops it.

Either way, wouldn't worry overly much.

Then its because you have no load on it, just read somehwere 2 mins ago that when jumping it you need to have something drawing power like a fan etc.

your psu's fine

I dont know if it does damage or not but you would think a thin piece of metal bridging 2 wires can never be healthy.

its upto you just my 2 cents.

I never had no problems doing this and in OP's case was underload during that time (albeit only a pump)

Have not heard of a case where a PSU has died from being jumped.
