I've had my cooler master 650w psu about 4-5 years now.. I upgraded rest of my old rig to what's in my sig ATM.. Looking to get a gtx670 in the next week or 2. Should I upgrade the psu ??? Not sure what lifespans psu's have tbh..

Any help or advice would b appreciated :D

I Personally run my PSUs into the ground but hey, that's just me :).

If you were going to consider buying a new PSU then I would recommend either Corsair or XFX. Also 650w will be fine for one 670 but if you plan on buying a second in the future then you may want to go for 750w +

my last psu was still good after about 6 years of almost 24/7 uptime

i only upgraded it because i needed a psu with more pcie connectors

Until it dies or I need a bigger one! Even at 4-5 years old, as long as it's a decent one to begin with it will be fine. Obviously over time there will be some degredation and wear etc but you'll be fine running a single GTX670 of a 650W power supply even if it is an ageing one.

If you do upgrade, don't throw it away. Having a known good PSU kicking about is really handy. Helped me out in a few builds. Got an old Seasonic S12-600 which must be 8 years old and still going strong.

The one in my mums PC is about 10 years old and still works fine.
I needed to use a 20-24pin adaptor for the motherboard and a 4pin + molex adaptor for the 8pin CPU socket when I last upgraded her system lol :D

I ran my last main PC 24/7 with a modest overclock for nearly 5 years and the PSU failed (not taking anything out) last month, it was an OCZ 500W. It died fairly gracefully, one day the PC didn't boot properly had a little spark and it was over.

I thought that was pretty good performance and if it had not gone slightly boom I would happily have reused it.

Just checked my invoice 2006 and my Enermax liberty 620 is now six years old and still performing like a champ, rails for spot on, powers a simple ssd + WD 500gb, two case fans, gtx 460, and a simple 2500k at 4.6gig

Compared to my old 500 watt hiper, 550 CWT and 600 seasonic, the Enermax has been the best.

Touchpower Cable Management 850W psu, I have no idea why i bought an 850w, as i'm pretty sure it was for a core2duo system!

But its still alive. Thinking its 6years old now easily.

I upgraded my Antec to a Corsair when the GTX 280 came out as it needed more juice.
Wacked the Antec into a home server build which runs 24/7, must be about 7 years old and still chugging along!

My trusty UltraX connect is a 500w and is being used in my server and somehow its still going so strong I think its about 6 years old now.

I only recently retired my longest lasting and best used PSU of all time, and thatis my QTech Gold 550. I bought it about 700 years ago and I used it to death, sold it to a mate who needed an emergency PSU got it back 3 or 4 years later when I had his whole PC and I used it for a couple more years myself but now my mum has it in her PC.

When did QTEC first bring the 550w Gold PSU out? I got it then! - I was in my old flat and I moved from there 12 years ago?

Its never missed a beat.

I have some horror stories about OCZ and Hyper PSUs however, or my most recent murderer wasa 880w G7 from craplins that I am in the process of claiming for a Mobo, CPU and RAM with.

So people keep saying.

I have no doubt that Qtec are not the best, but I hve been more than happy with them. Their grey boxes not so much so, but the gold ones have been rock solid. I know that when I got mine, for years I was tellign friends and colleagues how much I rated mine and I know that loads of them went out and got one, and as far as I know, everyone was very happy with theirs.

On the other hand, I have Hyper, Tagan, and OCZ PSUs upstairs that have all suffered and died in under 2 or 3 years.

Sometimes its just plain luck whether or not its a good PSU.
