PSU makes Hideous Noise (video)

Sounds like the fans bearings have rusted or the fan blades are catching on a cable. Either way requires opening the PSU to have a look, voiding the warranty in the process. Which PSU is it, how old and whats your setup like?

it's a Tagan TG900-U33 900w 2-Force II, it's just under 2 years old.

My set up is an i5 750 @ 3.8, 5850 820/1175 1.135v, p55-ud5, couple of harddrives.

If the bearings have rusted is there a way of fixing that at all?

You can replace the fan, yet I'm not sure how long the warranty is on a tagan PSU. Might be worth looking at your manufacturers website and seeing if you are still covered and if so, RMAing the PSU.

I emailed them a few days ago about it but no reply yet, I have a feeling it's at least 2 years.

what sort of fan would i require?

That I'm not sure mate, although you might be able to buy a replacement fan directly from tagan, which would be a bonus (if the PSU is out of warranty).

how long do they take? I'm not sure I can wait that long i'm on the verge of ripping it out and throwing it out of my window...

Think you'd be looking at a couple of weeks for an RMA, assuming its done properly by Tagan.

Have a look though at the fan and see if you can stop it with something. If the noise stops then it's the fan. I can't think what else it could be as power supplies have no moving parts apart from the cooling fan.

According to a review of your PSU it seems to have 2x 80mm fans running at 2600rpm each. Should be easy to fit replacements to the lid fan but not so easy for the rear facing fan. I've replaced both types and had no issues.

don't put it in too far, it would result in a hair raising experience! XD

I was thinking of doing that, but didn't for that reason exactly!

It tends to happen when I'm playing games it seems and It could be me but when it happens my game drops frames.

Sort of annoying i can't buy one off someone on the forums.. need 1000 posts or something.

sounds to me like the fans slightly catching on the case, take out and carefully rotate the fan to see where or if its catching on the psu case or fan grill and bend it out slightly so it misses it,could even change the entire fan if that was faulty, they either plug in or solder on inside

if that was the case wouldn't it do it all the time? It's silent as I speak/type.

sorry you didnt say whether it does it all the time or only when cold? if cold it could not be catching once its warmed up ect idk,i would deffinatly take out and carefully inspect the fan and if its catching on the case of psu

would be the same for fan bearings, cold=noisy, warm=no noise, thats if its metal bearings, normally they use nylonm sleeve bearing and they lubricate themselves

It's just started again while I was watching 24... I don't think it can take the intenseness that is Jack Bauer. I'll take it out and have a good look at it when i get the chance!

What happens when you load up your CPU with Prime95 or something?

Increasing load on the PSU will raise temperatures and accordingly the fans will ramp up speed.

I still say stop the fan with a cable tie or something when you hear the noise to determine which fan it is and look at replacing. If it's RMA-able then look at doing that if you can be without it for a couple of weeks.

sounds like a failing fan definitely, with that volume of noise you should surely be able to hear which fan it is just by putting your ear next to it, no?

I'll stick a cable tie in it next time it happens, i'm getting a "delayed" email response from the emails I sent... This isn't giving me much hope of getting a new PSU.
