situation is this

built rig for bro 3 years ago

spec was:

x2 4600+ am2
2gb g.skill ddr2
seagate 7200.10 320gb
akasa zen case
enermax 500w modular psu
asus am2 mobo

earlier this year the mobo packed in and purchased by my bro was an asus a8n sli premium

3 weeks ago the rig would not boot at all. Nothing to the mobo no lights or anything. Dead psu was diagnosed and, in my eyes, confirmed when the enermax was reported as being 'stinking'.

Finally got round to ordering a new psu last week and ocuk duly delivered an ocz modxstream 700w modular psu.

Tonight a mate and I install the new psu fully expecting a 'wham bam thank you mam' style pc repair.

Green flashing light on mobo but nothing else. Putting my antec 450w psu in gives only a faint solid green light. However, all 3 psu's power up my rig ( old socket 939 job ) without complaint.

Is this REALLY a case of another dead mobo??

Cheers for any tips.

Are you sure the X2 4600+ is AM2 because the Asus A8N sli premium is a socket 939 board?

It's mostly conjecture, but...

One of previous power supply and motherboard damaged the other, leaving both somewhat faulty. Replaced board fixed this, as the psu was still just about capable of running a working board. However the psu is now sending out somewhat erratic voltages, which over time killed the replacement board.

I would recommend against running your computer using the suspect psu.

Your call where to go from here. I'd rma the board and never attach the psu to anything again

After a bit of research last night while we where trying different combinations, i read that the Flashing Green LED light is wired too +5VSB.

So i have read many different sites saying stuff like Overloading PSU, The PSU switching on/off rapidly.

When we tried connecting it up the 450W Antec PSU the Green LED was a very dim brightness.

The thing that gets me is that all 3 power supplies (even the suspected failure) will still power another PC. So it leads me to think about it being the mobo at fault (again)?

It will not be a under powered issue. The rig in my siggy only draws a max of 274w at the wall and that's when running Prime and Fur stability test at the same time. It would seem that the Enermax psu that failed damaged the motherboard at the same time.

Did you get a chance to check what mobo it is?

The only thing is that the Enermax PSU will still power up a different computer.

There are so many people diagnosing the Flashing LED as different things so it just makes me more confused what it could be. Im wondering if there is a fault deep inside the Asus Mobo. I will try and find out the exact model.

sorry guys ive no idea of the EXACT model of the mobo.. the box is not with me and my bro is away for a couple of days.

All i down know is its an am2 asus board SLi Premium .. its exact name escapes me completely.

Considering the comments about the enermax im really wishing i hadnt tried it in my rig now... oh well... might have to do an emergency upgrade on mine now ;)

silver linings and all....
