Are they generic, will one psu cable fit another ?

I have a psu in my sons pc which has a missing modular cable so I only have one 6-pin pci-e power cable.

Can I buy a generic one from somewehere rather than going to the manufacturer and spending £20 on postage and money for the cable too?

Depends on the Manufacturer. My Psu's modular cables are double ended. So a PCIe 6+2 on one end, and another on the other, just in blue (for no apparent reason). Some manufacturers use their own ends on the modular end. You can always try and return if it doesn't work!

Yes depends on the manufacturer, you will find that some PSUs brands will have the same connectors, but this is due to them being the same PSU just rebranded most of the time.

I've ordered the cable from the manufacturer now, cost £19 all in with postage :(

PSU was only £30 second hand, I purhchased a GTX460 for my sons pc thinking it would be just 1 x 6-pin cable but it has two...bugger.

I always thought that the amps had to come from the correct rail on the psu, and with that connector it would tell the psu it has a pcie cable connected but wouldn't deliver the required amps?

Well 2 Molex cables are enough to power most PCIe cards comfortably. The PSU is not exactly smart, so It wouldnt have a clue whats plugged into it, just churns out the power best it can.

I think you would have been fine running it off of a 2-molex-to-6-pin connector, but get a second opinion first!

I have done a little research and pretty much all the results are positive!
