PSU Nightmare!

Computer died completely last night, no post, nothing, just fans running (talk about a stressful night!!). Thought it was the PSU and luckily i was proved right when i just bought a replacement from PC World.
I had a OCZ 700W ModXstream, system is heavily overclocked with a AMD 965 running at 3.8Ghz, 8 Gig Ram, GTX570 overclocked and overvolted, 3 HDS, many fans.
So anyone with any experience of PSU's able to shed some light on what may have happened. The PSU was 2.5 yrs old. Surely it should have lasted longer? And it i overloaded it surely it wouldnt die completely?

Anyways my PC World 700W OCZ is a stop gap as i want to order something today from OCUK that will last longer and more headroom. Recommendations????

Thanks for your input guys.

Sometimes PSU's just die :(

Be glad it didn't take anything else out with it.

Replacement wise, I'm very happy with my 850W Coolermaster silent pro. I'm sure others will be along shortly with their suggestions. There have been a few PSU threads recently so it might be worth reading through them.

All electronics can die randomly if you're unlucky, it may just have had a weak component within it that gave way after 2 years of use.

I would have thought an OCZ 700W PSU would be fine for that setup, I doubt it draws anywhere near 700W.

It just had enough and decided to let go.

Unfortunately they will do this, particularly the cheaper ones. When they do let go they can also take other components with them but looks like you got away with it. This has happened to me in the past and I was lucky too.:D

It's wise to buy a good quality branded PSU over the cheaper ones.

My Enermax went pop a few years ago and that was only 2 years old max, your system would pull 400w ~ max with both cpu and gpu stressed.

PSUs, just like Hard Drives and motherboards fail sometimes. I've had one dead on arrival, one fail after 8 weeks and yet have others work for many years. I've even had no names soldier on for longer than named brands so I suppose you can never tell.

A good PSU will provide you with better regulated power and won't typically send a surge through your PC as it dies.

The OCZ you have from PCW will be fine as it's made by one of the largest OEM Power Supply makers in the world.

Coolermaster Silent Pro 850W seems to be pretty popular so i went and got one of these for under £100, Corsairs were a bit more pricey, and the CM has 5yr warrenty also. This will fit in my Antex 300 case no bother?

Thanks for the advice
