PSU noise and shutdowns

Hi

I have a Corsair hx1200i

I've had issues on and off with the PSU for quite some time but now it can't keep the PC on for more than a couple minutes

It boots to windows fine, but once in windows the PSU starts emitting a high pitched whining noise - sounds like the worst capacitor whine you've heard from a GPU, and once it starts making this noise the PC will shutdown within 30 seconds

What inside the PSU could be causing this

It could be anything. One thing is for sure, if it's shutting itself down there is definately a fault and I wouldn't be using that psu. Time for a RMA I think.

100%. Some sort of PSU regulation is probably keeping you safe - an actual blown cap might be a fire hazard or might blow up other components.
