PSU noise

I have an Antec truepower 750 watt. I recently bought a 570GTX graphics card.

When opening a benchmark a noise comes from the PSU that sounds like a mechanical hard drive in constant use, but maybe a bit louder than a hard drive

Is this usual?

The 570 uses 2 x 6 pin from the PSU. Its never made this noise before but then its never needed to use the extra 12V rails

Are you sure its not the gpu, reason being mine likes to herd whilst folding and certain programs and games.

Its definately not the GPU. The GPU sounds loud when on load, the PSU makes this noise as soon as the benchmark starts. Like its upping the voltage or something

I put my head inside my case and the noise is from right at the bottom where the PSU is

It can be either, not 100% sure what causes it but i think it's to do with feedback from the gpu to the psu, my old 1.5Gb 580 used to do it a tiny bit when using my Antec TPQ 850w, i then bought an Ocz ZX1250w and the card stopped whinning but the psu was 10x louder lol, changed to a pair of 3Gb 580's and swopped out the psu for the Antec HCP 1200w and it's all gone :)

I fired up GTA4 and it started making a screaching noise that was quite high pitch and kept changing slightly. It didnt sound good

What do I do as I have not had a problem with it until using a more powerful graphics card

I bought it from here on 22 Feb, 2011. Should I contact Ocuk or Antec?

This thread pretty much sums it up.

Noises are on GTA4 loading screens and heaven benchmark. The guy who I bought my 570 GTX off didnt have these noises and he had a different PSU

Should I RMA this OcUK for a replacement? I really dont fancy leaving it in my system if its going to either break equipment that costs £££s or blow up

That sound is probably coil whine, when there a certain load on it.

Yeah that whine happens a lot when you have a powerfull video card and and a 3d game menu that runs way beyond 500 fps, causing the video card to draw quite a lot of power while it doesnt need to.

The game that does it the worst is Postal 2, without vsync on i can hear my psu whine, with a very high pitched tone. Gta 4 loading screens without vsync does it as well, but not that loud.

I have the same problem with my Antec TP-650. It is fine with my old 8600GTS but with my current 560Ti and previous 470 it makes some odd noises under load. It shows up in Heaven, Furmark, Black Ops and BFBC2. I have been replaying Crysis in the past few days but haven't noticed anything with my headphones on.

I had read various posts over the past several months of people having noise issues with different makes of PSU, so I assumed it was the luck of the draw getting a very quiet one but I now wonder about that

Its pretty annoying but doent bother me too much. However it it blows up and takes a load of components with it then I wont be happy at all

I am suffering a slight bout of paranoia about it now, as I RMA'd my 470 a couple of weeks ago and I never did find out what the actual fault was. Could a faulty PSU cause damage to components gradually or only if it blows?
