Building a new rig in a Sonata II and I have found the PSU to be non working correctly, would I have to RMA the full case back to OC or does anyone know if I can remove the PSU unit and send that back? I have the PC running on an alternative PSU at the moment but its not really got enough juice for what I wanted as its only 250w

Be a bit of a pain if I have to return the full unit

I had a similar issue with an ASpire X-QPack case and I had to return the whole lot, which was a bit of a pain as I'd cut the rear fan grille out. Rather surprisingly, I got my old case back with a new PSU.

Actually I probably blew it up myself by being an idiot, so I guess I should just do the right thing and buy a replacement, would the Antec TrueBlue 2.0 480W PSU fit straight in there?

It's almost impossible to damage a modern PSU unless you were poking things in the vents or sticking jumpers across the pins of the 24 pin connector when it wasn't in the motherboard.

Yes, it's going to be a beggar to have to send it back, but they sold you a duff PSU for goodness sake. Don't be so British about it. You have rights - you bought a case with a PSU. It doesn't work. It has to work for a least a year by law.

If it's a new case (ie. inside 28 days) then they should send you a new one immediately anyway.

Sorry to get all 'strict nanny' about it, but I feel VERY strongly about customer service.

Ok basically I was doing my first PC build and I put the 20 pin power in then I assumed the extra 4 pin goes in as well, when it did not work I put the 4 pin in the other way round then it made a funny noise and now wont boot the pc when i put the proper 4 pin connection into the mobo, so I am guessing I blew it by being stupid, unless your saying this would not blow it and in fact it was broken to begin with?

The 4 pin connection will only go in one way, unless you really forced it.

You have probably blown both the PSU and the motherboard, and could be more depending on how they both took it.

Have you another old rig to test if the PSU is working, completely unimportant rig of course incase it fries it.

the mobo still works as its running just now but on a 250w unbranded PSU so I am not keen on keeping using it, the 4 pin I put in the wrong way was the 4 pins extra for a 24 pin mobo if you follow me, and really they did not need any force to go in the other way round, the yellow and black 4 pin which should be connected does only go one way but now as I say it wont boot the pc

so i guess i did blow it? so i should just stump up the dosh for being stupid as I doubt they will RMA it due to it being down to an idiot at the controls LOL

Try and RMA it to the manufacturer maybe, could give OcUK a shot but don't be surprised if they turn you down as it was user error.

Good luck with it, thankfully it was a good PSU so did not blow the whole rig with it, its protection just meant that it died and nothing else. :)

Yeah I'm thinking they will just send it back as they can surely realise its been broken by myself, would the PSU be repairable tho? I may as well order the new one as its on a this week only deal anyway, and learn the hard way from my mistakes.

Worth a try, and no it will not be repairable, at least by you.

PSU's should never be opened up, they can hold charge for years after being turned on!

I don't see how you could have put tem in the 'wrong' way - the pins are symmetrical so it doesn't actually matter what way round you fit it.

This is probably a daft question - but have you tried turning it off at the wall and trying it again? If you did fuse it, it might just need a complete power recycle to reset itself.

Yeah I actually dismantled the whole pc last night and re-built it today and the same problem would not boot, just spun the fans, as soon as I tried the other PSU it booted fine, so I think its safe to assume the PSU is gone, I will just order a new one and learn my lesson, thanks guys
